Intelligent robots of the future
Robotics has for long been the key to efficient manufacturing. However, current robots mostly perform rigid tasks in a production pipeline with no ability to operate in changing environments. Next-generation autonomous robots operate among humans and require a completely new set of skills.
Not only do robots need to understand their surroundings, but they should also be able to cooperate with humans and even predict human actions. Applicants should hold a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, mathematics, automation engineering, signal processing, or a related discipline.
Students should be familiar with the basics of programming, digital logic and processors. The recommended prior learning also includes familiarity with machine learning and control engineering.
Major studies in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence combine modern machine learning techniques with modern robotics. After completing the programme, students will be familiar with machine learning and signal processing methods and will be able to adopt and adapt these techniques, especially in the robotics application domain. Students will also be able to design, train and deploy machine learning models for classification and regression. The degree programme will also provide students with expert-level knowledge of robotics and artificial intelligence technologies that are needed in industry and the development of consumer applications.
In this degree programme, the machine learning courses cover both theory and practice and address a wide spectrum of machine learning techniques in classification, regression and unsupervised learning settings. In some courses, we also organise machine learning competitions, where students solve research problems. The robotics courses teach you to operate the physical world, and together these two domains use different sensor techniques – cameras, acceleration sensors, even audio – to sense the surroundings and assist in robot control.
Tampere University offers students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. A rich variety of minor studies and supplementary courses are available as well as the opportunity to concentrate purely on major studies. In fact, each degree is a unique combination of studies that the individual student has found most interesting.
Structure of studies
The programme is comprised of 120 ECTS. Courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a master's thesis. Each ECTS is equal to an average workload of 27 hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study and an examination. The duration of the programme is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
After completing the programme, you will be qualified to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in the different fields of technology. The skills of intelligent robot designers are in high demand. A clear benefit of the programme is that it combines two vibrant and growing fields of engineering and therefore paves the way for our graduates to pursue a successful career in either domain.
Graduated Masters of Science typically find employment in research, design, development, production and operating tasks, or commercial and administrative tasks relating to the field, without excluding abilities to work as a researcher, teacher or manager. Following the successful completion of the programme, our graduates will also be eligible to apply for admission to doctoral programmes in Finland or abroad.
Tuition fees and scholarships
The tuition fee for the programme is 12,000 euros per academic year for non-EU/EEA students with a scholarship system for fee-paying students.
You will not be required to pay the fee if you are:
- an EU/EEA citizen
- equivalent to EU/EEA citizen (i.e. a citizen of Switzerland)
- already reside in Finland (a continuous A or a permanent P/P-EU residence permit), or have an EU Blue Card issued in Finland. The exempting residence permit must be valid when you are applying for studies and at least until 1 August i.e. when the study right commences. Please note that a residence permit in another EU/EEA country does not exempt you from the tuition fee.
Tampere University Scholarships Programme is intended for students who are required to pay tuition fees in Master’s degree programmes offered in English.
