Program Description

Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology - Human-Technology Interaction

Tampere Universities

Learn to design successful interactive products

Technology is everywhere. We all use various technological systems every day, and the user experience is critical to their success or failure.

By studying Human-Technology Interaction, you will be prepared for the challenges of designing increasingly complex technological systems.

Besides functionality, the systems must be easy to control and provide positive user experiences.

Applicants should have a background in software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or information technology. Previous studies in design-related topics, user experience or human-computer interaction will be considered an advantage. A strong commitment to a human-centred design approach is required to become successful in this field.

This programme is offered in collaboration with TAUCHI.

Study objectives

The Master’s Degree Programme in Human-Technology Interaction educates experts in three different focus areas: user experience [MSc (Tech)], interaction design and development of interactive software (MSc). The degrees have their own admission and degree requirements.

After completing the studies in Human-Technology Interaction leading to an MSc (Tech) degree, the student understands the main theories and practices related to the user experience of interactive products and services. The student can also take into account the user needs and characteristics in human-technology interaction. The programme offers skills to design, implement and prototype interactive systems according to human-centred design principles and processes. The student can also apply different user interface styles and interaction techniques to different contexts of use and application domains, including mobile and pervasive computing. He/she also knows the central processes and methods of software engineering and can apply user experience knowledge in software engineering processes.

Study contents

The studies give you a solid practical and theoretical background for understanding, analysing, and designing human-centred technologies and their user interfaces. A special emphasis is placed on user-centred design methods and their integration in product development, as well as evaluating user experience with end users. The research conducted at Tampere University means that the contents of the studies are of a high academic level. On the other hand, close connection to companies helps to keep the contents relevant also for careers outside academia.

Tampere University offers its students an opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. A rich variety of minor studies and supplemental courses are available as well as the opportunity to concentrate purely on major studies. In fact, each degree is a unique combination of studies the individual student has found most interesting.

Structure of studies

The programme leading to MSc in Technology is comprised of 120 ECTS credits. The courses are 90 ECTS credits and the master's thesis 30 ECTS credits. Each ECTS credit is equal to an average workload of twenty-seven hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study and examinations. The duration of the programme is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.

Career opportunities

Studies in the Master's Degree Programme in Human-Technology Interaction - User Experience opens the door to a broad range of career opportunities in the field of human-technology interaction. If you are a good communicator and an excellent team player in addition to having solid technical skills, a career as a user experience designer or researcher awaits you. Following the successful completion of the programme, master's degree holders are also eligible to apply for entrance to doctoral programmes in Finland and abroad.

Tuition fees and scholarships

The tuition fee for the programme is 12,000 euros per academic year for non-EU/EEA students with a scholarship system for fee-paying students.

You will not be required to pay the fee if you are:

  • an EU/EEA citizen
  • equivalent to EU/EEA citizen (i.e. a citizen of Switzerland)
  • already reside in Finland (a continuous A or a permanent P/P-EU residence permit), or have an EU Blue Card issued in Finland. The exempting residence permit must be valid when you are applying for studies and at least until 1 August i.e. when the study right commences. Please note that a residence permit in another EU/EEA country does not exempt you from the tuition fee.

Scholarships

Tampere University Scholarships Programme is intended for students who are required to pay tuition fees in Master’s degree programmes offered in English. A substantial number of scholarships will be available. With the help of the scholarship programme, Tampere University provides excellent international students with high-quality, yet affordable, education.

When filling in your application form for a Master’s degree programme, you have the possibility to indicate your wish to apply for a scholarship. The decision on the granted scholarship will be communicated to you together with information on admission.
