Overview

This new degree programme prepares media professionals, artists, musicians and designers to explore the vast opportunities that new media technologies offer in the field.

This mid-career Master’s degree requires 3 years of work experience after Bachelor’s.

Master’s Degree Programme in Emerging Media nurtures an entrepreneurial attitude, co-creation and maker culture while exploring the art of possible. The studies have a multidisciplinary approach that combines emerging technologies, content creation, design thinking and artistic practices with sustainable problem-solving of societal challenges.

In the professional studies, you will experiment with emerging media and various design approaches. You will explore how art and content creation are related to new technologies, such as extended reality (XR), machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Furthermore, sustainable value creation addressing societal challenges and creative customer development methods are studied.

For your Master’s degree, you will be engaged in active, self-directed learning required for taking over new technologies and application fields. This is supported by personal coaching as the principal teaching method. The studies are organised mainly online, with four intensive co-creation workshop weeks.

Study objectives

Emerging Media means media forms and technologies that are still in their early phase, requiring innovators and creators to explore and experiment uses for them. In a constantly changing media environment, there is a need for art and media professionals who are able to adapt rapidly new technologies in their work. Furthermore, considering the global megatrends, the Master's Degree in Emerging Media nurtures holistic worldview and emphasises the role of art and media in sustainable development.

The programme prepares media professionals, artists, musicians and designers to explore the vast opportunities that new media technologies offer in the creative field. The programme nurtures an entrepreneurial attitude, co-creation and maker culture while exploring “the art of possible”: what can be done at the moment. The studies have a multidisciplinary approach that combines emerging technologies, content creation, design thinking and artistic practices with sustainable problem solving of societal challenges. The education strengthens the skills of creative thinking, problem-solving and collaborative design aiming at professionals working at the edge of innovation.

This programme will enable the participants to:

  • develop an entrepreneurial attitude and self-learning skills in taking over rapidly changing media forms and technologies
  • consider sustainability and societal challenges in their work
  • implement a holistic value creation approach including social, environmental and economic aspects of value creation in their work
  • develop their problem-solving skills and implementation of design methods in innovation processes
  • implement the experimental culture in innovation processes
  • combine artistic approach with innovation and technology
  • develop their skills for leading and managing co-creation in multicultural teams
  • carry out innovative/artistic emerging media project
  • research, analyse and reflect critically topics and practices related to studies.

More about the language of instruction

The language of the degree programme is English.

Study contents

The extent of the studies is 60 credits and duration 1.5 years. The largest study is the Master’s thesis (30 credits) that covers half of the studies. In the advanced professional studies (25 credits) students experiment emerging media and study various design approaches. They explore and experiment how art and content creation are related to emerging technologies such as extended reality (XR), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). Furthermore, sustainable value creation addressing societal challenges and creative customer development methods are studied. Free-choice studies (5 credits) are for extending student’s knowledge and skills in the relevant field related to Master’s project.

In the studies, self-directed learning is emphasised as the fundamental method for gaining the learning objectives. Therefore, all the studies students are guided actively to form their own learning objectives and also to utilise the informal resources of the internet in an efficient way.

Tuition fees

The tuition fee for the programme is 10 800 euros per academic year for non-EU/EEA students with a scholarship system for fee-paying students.

Final project

The Master’s thesis executes and reports an innovative/artistic emerging media project related to sustainable development. The requirement for the thesis project is that there is a commissioner or a cooperation partner in the project. The report is an academic study related to the practical emerging media project.

The graduates will qualify for leading and performing demanding tasks in the area of art, media and innovation both in creative industries and other industry sectors.
