Do you want to be part of climate change mitigation? The Corporate Environmental Management Master’s Programme (CEM) enhances understanding and provides expertise on these issues and more.
The CEM Master’s Programme is a sustainability programme with an environmental focus. It offers its graduates an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues preparing the graduates to tackle these complex issues in working life. The international learning environment provides skills for identifying and managing environmental impacts; promoting environmental sustainability in business; and innovating new business solutions and sustainable business models. Jyväskylä was the first university in in the Nordic region to offer a complete master and doctoral programme in Corporate Environmental Management. Training in CEM was launched in 1995 and the programme has been an international master’s degree programme since 2003. Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics has been proactive in integrating corporate environmental management in its curriculum, research, and other activities. Our education has therefore been internationally acknowledged by the World Resource Institute in 2001 and the Aspen Institute in 2005-2011.
The CEM-programme offers courses in 3 different focus areas: 1. Identification of environmental impacts in organisational operations 2. Management of environmental impacts of organisational operations 3. Promote environmental sustainability in business and innovate new business solutions and sustainable business models. The students with a business studies background will study basic courses in environmental sciences and the students with an environmental background (e.g. environmental engineering) will study basic business studies as their minor. The programme incorporates also courses with working-life relevance and has an extensive research component through the Master’s thesis and related courses.
Tuition fees will be introduced only for non-EU/EEA students in Finland from August 2017 onwards. The fees will concern non-EU/EEA degree students who start their studies in English-taught Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that at the University of Jyväskylä. The fees will not concern those non-EU/EEA students who
- have started their studies before autumn 2017
- are enrolled in Doctoral/PhD level studies and research
- study in degree programmes taught in Finnish
- are EU/EEA citizens or their family members (spouse/child)
- are already residing in Finland or some other EU country on a permanent basis (i.e. are equivalent to EU citizens *)
* continuous (A) or permanent (P/P-EU) residence permit type
Structure of studies
The programme (total 120 ECTS) consists of a) major studies in Corporate Environmental Management, b) minor studies in business studies OR additional requisite studies in environmental science, c) language studies, and d) supplementary studies if the student’s previous Bachelor’s degree does not contain all the required courses. Primarily our applicants have either a business background or natural sciences background (eg. environmental engineering), but we do also accept applicants from other fields provided that their motivation is well-explained.
At the end of the studies, students should write a Master's thesis. On successful completion of the Master's thesis, students will be able to:
- successfully complete an individual academic research project;
- identify problems related to corporate environmental management, and define and justify research problems for their own Master’s thesis;
- form a theoretical framework for an academic study;
- identify and justify the choice of the research methods of their own Master’s thesis;
- analyse and evaluate research results;
- make theoretical and practical conclusions based on research results;
- produce an academic research report.
Graduates from the Master's Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management can work either in the public sector in public administration, municipalities, towns or environment centres, or in the private sector in companies. In addition, national and international non-governmental and other organisations are potential employers. Job titles can be for example: sustainability expert/specialist/analyst, environmental manager/expert, sustainability project manager, sales and sustainability specialist, corporate responsibility reporting specialist, project coordinator, sustainability and biofuels expert, climate and energy consultant, energy trader, researcher; and entrepreneur.The graduates can also work in the field of environmental-related marketing, accounting, entrepreneurship, reporting and communications based on their own interests.
The graduates receive a Master of Science degree (Economics and Business Administration).
The Master's Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management is an international programme with students from all over the world. Students are encouraged to apply to international internships and the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics offers possibilities for student exchange internationally.
Co-operation with other parties
We actively cooperate with business and organisations. There are several visitors from enterprises in the courses and concrete business cases are utilised for the course assignments. In addition, the CEM-programme research group actively cooperates with organisations and research institutes.
