As technology plays an increasing role in our daily life, it is important to have professionals who have a deep understanding of how to develop the most user-friendly and engaging methods to interact with a wide variety of technological devices. This master program is offered in collaboration between the University of Tampere (UTA) and the Tampere University of Technology (TUT). Students can deepen their knowledge in course units that cover a wide range of topics from user experience and emotions to an innovative use of facial behavior like gaze and expressions, touch, speech, and human physiology in user interfaces.

The program leads you to scientific thinking and writing as well as to hands-on work in various course projects. Although the program is available in essentially the same format at both universities it is recommended that if you are mainly interested in interaction design, development of interactive software or research you apply to UTA and if you are mainly interested in user experience you apply to TUT. That way the majority of the course units will be organized by the home university.

The master program has a direct link to research carried out by TAUCHI, Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction. TAUCHI is a UTA research center focusing on human-technology interaction. It carries out a wide range of multidisciplinary research into technology-mediated novel ways of multimodal interaction with devices, environments, and people.

TAUCHI explores and develops better and more intuitive user interfaces for the future. It harmonizes the potential of new technologies with human abilities, needs, and limitations. TAUCHI expertise covers new technologies such as smart objects and environments, gestural interfaces, gaze tracking, haptics, mixed reality, computer vision, speech-, context- or emotion-based interaction, virtual avatars, user experience and usability.

Study objectives

After completing the Master’s degree program in Human-Technology Interaction you will both:

  • know the theoretical foundations of human-technology interaction, and
  • have the necessary skills to apply this knowledge to practical work in the area.

Career opportunities

Many work opportunities are available for graduates of this program. Some of the possible future careers include working as:

  • an interface developer who has the skills to implement advanced solutions that broaden the capabilities of current devices and interfaces,
  • as an interaction designer who studies people in their natural environments and creates technology designs, or
  • as a usability and user experience specialist who makes sure that the technology designs are easy to use and fit human purposes.

The eligibility criteria in the Master's degree program in Human-Technology Interaction consist of two parts: the University of Tampere general eligibility criteria and program-specific eligibility criteria which specify and add information to the general criteria. Applicants must meet both in order to be considered eligible.

General eligibility

To be eligible to apply to a Master's degree program at UTA, an applicant must have

  1. a completed university-level Bachelor's degree or equivalent in the field of the desired Master program or in a closely related subject, AND
  2. fluency in English sufficiently advanced for academic studies. For the requirements, please see the section on Language requirements.

Program specific eligibility criteria

Eligible to apply to the Master's degree program in Human-Technology Interaction is an applicant who has a completed suitable university-level Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Interactive Technology (HCI), Computer Science, Design, Education, Media Studies, Psychology, Sociology, or another relevant field with studies in human-computer interaction.

Applicants with an unfinished Bachelor's degree

The Bachelor's degree or equivalent must be completed well before the program begins. If the degree is not completed by the end of the application period, an applicant can be accepted to the program on the condition that s/he sends an officially attested copy of the degree certificate to the University by 31 July 2018.
