Justification of the title

People constitute one of the main assets of any organization, which makes increasingly necessary the professionalization of those responsible for human resources. A few decades ago, human resources management was limited to the administration of personnel (payroll and benefits management, contracts and labor regulations). Their contribution to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the organizations was not questionable; it just did not exist. Today it is essential to have qualified personnel. As can be seen from a study carried out by the Community of Madrid in 2007, the postgraduate matter most demanded by companies is that of human resources (for more than 44% of companies); way ahead of others such as the MBA (7.5%).

Although the target students are different, an additional indication of the interest of the proposed degree is offered by the confirmed experience of teaching this Master by a multitude of universities and other institutions for more than a decade with a varied offer of places that year after year they are sued.

Professionals graduated from these degrees have good job offers, and receive a large number of applications, not only in Spain, but from Latin America and Europe, with different degrees and professional profiles.

The most cutting-edge research in human resources management has shown empirically that through efficient management, the strategic direction of human resources becomes a competitive advantage, which has had an immediate effect on the interest generated by developing quality research on the role of human resources in the field of business management. Below are two essential indicators of the evolution of the academic and rigorous study of human resources: the number of researchers in the subject and the quality of their academic production.

In the first place, to know the number of researchers that officially belong to this area, it is worth taking as a reference the data published by the Academy of Management, which is the most important association of researchers in administration and business management at the international level.

According to this, the section of researchers included in the field of human resources management is formed by 3565 researchers and ranks fourth in the ranking by number of associated researchers3. A second indicator of the academic relevance of an area are publications. The academic production in terms of human resources is one of the most fruitful in the area of ​​organization. Various publications dealing with human resources are included in the prestigious Journal of Citations Report (JCR). Along with generalist journals that publish articles not only in the direction of human resources such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of International Business Review, Organization Science or the Journal of Management there is a significant number of publications specific on human resources. On the other hand, the Google Scholar search engine throws the following number of citations of articles, working documents and academic presentations for the most common terms such as "Human Resources" (1,130,000 citations) "Human Resource Management" (292,000 citations) ) and "Human Resources" (281,000 citations).

In short, the fundamental objective of the Master in Human Resources Management is to train new generations of analysts and professionals through technical specialization and management in areas related to the management of human capital in its many facets, namely: ( 1) the management of people in both public and private organizations; (2) the design, implementation and evaluation of people management practices; (3) the analysis of human capital management policies; (4) the formulation and implementation of industrial or labor relations management initiatives.

Many of the most important universities in the world teach specific postgraduate programs (masters or doctorates) in human resources. Although there is no specific ranking of the studies on human resources, among the Master's programs (or other analogous studies) in Strategic Human Resources Management that can be cited as international equivalents because of the proven quality of the universities that teach them, they stand out the following. All of them have been taken as references when contrasting this proposal.

In the United States, only the Society for Human Resource Management has officially certified more than 40 Masters of Science in human resources (see Table 5). The most prestigious programs include the Master of Science in Strategic Human Resource Management, taught by Rutgers University, considered to be the most reputable in the United States; the one offered by Cornell University, ILR's Human Resource Management that offers postgraduate studies mainly directed to the strategic direction of human resources and, finally, the Master of Human Resources and Industrial Relations, taught by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

At the European level there is a considerable variety of master's degrees in human resources management with emphasis on the strategic aspects of people management. Among them, the programs offered by the London School of Economics, Cranfield University, the London South Bank University, and the King's College in the United Kingdom, or those offered by the University, stand out for their specialization in strategic management of human resources. of Tilburg and the Universitá de Bocconi in Milan.

Finally, it should be noted that in the national context there is a variety of postgraduate studies (both master's and doctorate) on the management of human resources. Because it is a sector with great potential there is a varied educational offer in this regard; however, they are not all of the necessary academic relevance and prestige. In particular, there are fewer that focus on the management and strategic direction of human resources. Rather, a considerable number of official programs taught in Spain are promoted exclusively by departments of psychology and, therefore, give less importance to the aspects of management and direction, unlike the one proposed here, which, as above is indicated, it is constructed in parallel with another of the aforementioned profile.

The Master is preferably aimed at Graduates in Law, Labor Relations, ADE, Economics and Accounting and Finance, but can be accessed by other graduates (RD 1393/2007, Art. 16), preferably those that cover aspects related to the field of relations labor market and labor The required or recommended prerequisites of the different subjects of the Master, contained in your guide.

Orientation and mentoring

The systems of support and guidance for students enrolled in this Title are summarized in the following aspects:

  1. Initial informative session: at the beginning of the course an inaugural and informative session will be held by the teaching team of the Master. Details of the operation of the Faculty will be explained (computer rooms, bibliographic search and library loan, study rooms, etc.) and general orientations will be given on the curriculum and other academic matters (eg, rules of permanence , evaluations, calls, etc.). In this session, the Master's Guide will be given to the students.
  2. Preparation of the Master's Guide: this document will include information about the Faculty (library, teaching classrooms and seminars, computer rooms, etc.) and the departments and teachers responsible for the subjects of the Title (offices, tutorials of the teaching staff, teaching programs, etc.), teaching organization of the Master (schedules, academic calendars, etc.) and regulations and applicable academic regulations. The guide can be submitted in paper or digital format.
  3. Use of collaborative virtual environments: to facilitate communication and coordination with students, a virtual environment will be established through the Moodle platform that manages the Virtual Teaching Unit of the Universidad de La Laguna .
