The Master of Urban Management and Planning aims to provide you with the scholarship, skills and knowledge to successfully manage the planet's increasingly complex urban world.

You may be an existing urban professional or seeking to begin a career in this area. The flexibility of the course will suit professionals working in local government, regional organisations and state and federal government institutions. It will especially appeal to planners, in government and the private sector, looking for postgraduate qualifications with a focus on management.

Urban and regional planning

Urban and regional planners advise on the environmental needs, restrictions and guidelines of a particular area and develop policies for the use of land and resources. They frequently liaise with community and government representatives as well as undertaking a large amount of research that they subsequently write reports on.

Policy development involves researching, compiling and analysing a range of facts that relate to the benefit of society. It involves working with a range of government agencies and community groups to pinpoint relevant solutions.

Urban planning policy

Urban policy development involves researching, compiling and analysing a range of facts specific to an urban environment and creating it as a policy that will benefit the wider community.

Environmental impact assessment

Environmental impact assessment predicts the consequences that a certain policy, plan or project may have on the wider environment before they are implemented. It involves a wide range of research and analysis with a focus on protecting the environment.

Research

Research involves compiling data, analysing trends and noting observations in the area of urban trends and geography. This work is recorded in reports that are used to assist with the development of that field.

Admission

  • Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in planning, geography, social science, environmental studies, architecture and landscape studies, urban and regional studies or public policy
  • Applications from Australian and NZ citizens and holders of permanent resident visas must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
  • Applicants who have undertaken studies overseas may have to provide proof of proficiency in English.
