Master of Arts in Theological Studies

The Master of Theology (ThM) degree is an individually-focused research degree for candidates to prepare for admission to a doctoral program or advanced ministry. A bachelor's degree normally in arts and a first master's degree are a prerequisite for entrance. The ThM lasts for one year of full-time study, or up to six years of part-time study.

How to Apply

A baccalaureate degree, normally in Arts, from a recognized college or university (or the applicant must provide evidence of having completed equivalent studies under a different educational system); and a Master of Divinity degree or an academic master's degree in theological studies providing equivalent theological background (e.g., Master of Theological Studies, Master of Religion, Master of Arts in Theology of at least two years' duration), with at least a high second-class standing (i.e., B+, CGPA 3.3/4.0) from a recognized institution. All theological schools fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools are deemed to be recognized institutions.

Admissions Option 2

Option 1 (doctoral preparation): 6 courses, knowledge of 2 research languages, and a thesis of at least 12,500 words

Option 2 (terminal master's degree): 8 courses and an extended paper of at least 8,000 words related to one of the courses

Scholarships and Financial Aids for PhD, MA, ThM and DMin students

All full-time PhD, MA, ThM and DMin students may apply for bursary assistance, to be awarded based on financial need and/or scholarship. Applications will be judged on academic excellence, the significance of the student’s intended research and the student’s demonstrated financial need.

: Bursary applications should be filled out at the time of the program application and submitted before February 15.

The application requires the following documentation:

A letter that requests the consideration and outlines the applicant’s purpose in pursuing doctoral studies, the area of the proposed study and the significance of this topic both for Christian scholarship and for the Church's life and mission. Scholarships and Funding Option 2

The ThM is for those whose ministry is academically focused, who wish to explore a particular facet of ministry, or who wish to undertake a project in preparation for doctoral studies. Students graduating with a ThM have been admitted for doctoral degrees at Wycliffe and other ATS-accredited universities, colleges, and seminaries.

Ideal Students

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience in National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill type 0 or skill level A or B that is gained through the PGWPP helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry.

Students who have completed their program of study

Students who have completed their program of study are allowed to work (under paragraph 186(w) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations [IRPR]) while they are waiting for a decision on their post-graduation work permit application, provided they meet all of the following criteria:

they are or were holders of a valid study permit at the time of the post-graduation work permit application

they were a full-time student enrolled at a DLI in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program

they were authorized to work off-campus without a work permit

they did not exceed the allowable hours of work

Wycliffe College, a historical landmark in downtown Toronto, is ideally situated on the corner of Hoskin Avenue and Queen’s Park circle at the heart of the University of Toronto campus. From here, you'll have a short walk to Museum or St. George subway stations. It's an ideal location whether you are studying at Wycliffe College or in another department at the university.

We have seventy-five clean, comfortable rooms that are ideal for quiet, mature students to live in and pursue their studies. Residence rooms are furnished with a bed, closet or wardrobe, desk and chair, bookshelf and dresser, high-speed internet, phone and a cable TV connection is available.

Residents have access to shared kitchens, men and women’s washroom facilities, coin-operated laundry room, lounges, a chapel, billiards, game room, and snack machines. Cable TV in rooms is available at an extra cost.
