Structural designers play an important role in process of design and decision-making of building and infrastructure projects—from the commencement of the project till the completion of the same. With the complexities in architectural plans, advancement in the theory of dynamics and conservation of heritage structures, the need of competent structural designer has increased remarkably since few years. The program aims to train a Student in practical art and philosophy of structural design. It also gives the insight into investigation, assessment and strengthening of the damaged structures. The program also engages the students into the design of ongoing important industrial structures such as chimneys, silos, water tanks, bridges and ports.
Graduates from this program are well versed with norms and requirements of the design methodology adopted in various countries and hence are very well placed in leading national and international organizations. They have also been successful in starting their own practice and establishing a consultancy firm. A few of our graduates choose to pursue doctoral studies and take up a career in teaching and research.
The two-year program leading to award of Master of Technology in Structural Engineering Design is designed to enhance skills and knowledge of structural design for the students and working professionals in the construction and civil engineering sector. The pedagogy includes a wide variety of courses with significant emphasis on practical applications through hands-on studio exercises (working on life-like situations) and independent dissertation.
The Structural Engineering Design program focuses on building professional capacities and therefore, they are centred on ‘studios’. The studio based courses wherein all students work on live projects and come up with their own transformed structural systems, analysis and design. Professionals from eminent design offices are invited to teach the students and share their experiences.
Admissions and Prerequisites
In the first stage of scrutiny, all applications received will be scrutinized for eligibility based on information provided in the online application forms. All candidates who meet eligibility criteria will be considered for stage 2 (entrance exam). Subsequently, a shortlist of 300-350 candidates are cleared for the stage which includes interviews (in person or via tele conference). Final merit list is prepared based on the academic performance in UG program, score in entrance exam, score in interview, and total months of professional experience.
Applicants for the M.Tech. program in the general category should have a minimum of 55 % aggregate marks and those in the reserved categories should have a minimum of 50 % aggregate marks in Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering / Construction Technology / Architecture / Environmental Engineering from a recognized University / Institution.
International Entry Requirements
CEPT’s guiding principal for International Admissions is to seek equivalence between International standards achieved and those of Indian home students. There are differences between Europe, America and India in degree length, academic standards and award structure. CEPT will therefore consider each International application on its merits seeking international equivalence and bearing in mind any professional requirements that these Programs have.
