In the recent era, a wide gamut of ambitious structures is being designed in the world. Structural Engineering aims to connect the demands of geometry, materials and loads (gravity, wind and seismic) for various types of structures. The Structural Engineering Design Program at the Faculty of Technology, CEPT University is a reputed program that attracts architects and civil engineers interested in the profession of Structural Engineering. One of the major objectives of the program is to develop competent structural engineers who are industry ready to work in the profession.

The M. Tech. program in Structural Engineering Design (MSED) is a two-year program. Here, students learn state of the art methods and apply most recent guidelines and provisions laid by authority organizations in India. The range of structures designed by students includes low and high rise residential and commercial buildings, bridges, water tanks, industrial structures such as chimneys, silos and marine structures. The Structural Engineering Design program at CEPT University is a pioneering program that offers studio pedagogy where live projects under various categories are solved, designed and detailed by students under the guidance of faculty members. The program faculty comprises highly educated core faculty members and highly professional and experienced visiting faculty members. The faculty members guide the students in the design and detailing of structures in a setup similar to a design office. In between the semesters, students either take up summer/winter school on their topic of interest or office training in reputed organizations and firms or support the faculty in a selected research area.

The graduates of this program are either placed at leading consulting firms or have also started their own practice. The program has an official understanding with the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) at Gandhinagar, Gujarat which facilitates the students to gain an edge of seismology through expert sessions, visits and collaborative research. The long-time vision for this collaboration is to enable involved students and faculty to design structures that have better resistance to earthquakes. The program hosts periodically the meeting and gathering of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (Gujarat State Centre) that helps all structural engineering students, academicians, and professionals to stay up to date in matters of the Indian standards and professional practice implications.

The students of this program get involved in related competitions and challenges held on campus such as Bridge the Gap as well as competitions held at a national level (such as INSDAG, IAStructE etc.). These students also unite with other students at Faculty of Technology to celebrate the Engineer’s Day event. The students also participate in cultural events across and outside the campus for their enjoyment and all-round development. Sometimes the students go out of the country for winter schools/research /exchange studies to reputed organizations.

Curriculum


The two-year program leading to an award of Master of Technology in Structural Engineering Design is designed to enhance skills & knowledge of structural design for the students and working professionals in the construction and civil engineering sector.

The program aims to train a Student in practical art and philosophy of structural design. It also gives the insight into investigation, assessment, and strengthening of the damaged structures. The program also engages the students in the design of ongoing important industrial structures such as chimneys, silos, water tanks, bridges, and ports.

The Structural Engineering Design program focuses on building professional capacities and therefore, they are centered on ‘studios’. The studio-based courses wherein all students work on live projects and come up with their own transformed structural systems, analysis, and design. The professionals from eminent design offices are invited to teach the students and share their experiences.

Minimum Qualifications & Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the M.Tech. program in the general category should have a minimum of 55 % aggregate marks and those in the reserved categories should have a minimum of 50 % aggregate marks in Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering/ Construction Technology / Architecture from a recognized university/institution.

Applicant must have cleared XII Examination in science stream with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

Admission Procedure


Admission Process for the Program on Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Structural Engineering Design


Application process:

As per the decision of the University, the entire application process will be conducted online. Admission form is common for all above three programs and a single form is required to be filled to get admission in any of above programs.


Eligibility criteria for applications:

Applicants for the M.Tech. program in the general category should have a minimum of 55 % aggregate marks and those in the reserved categories should have a minimum of 50 % aggregate marks in qualifying degree (or equivalent) from a recognized University / Institution. Candidate must have cleared XII Examination in science stream with Mathematics and Physics as compulsory subjects.


Evaluation process of applications received:

This will be done in five stages as mentioned below:

Stage 1 - Scrutiny for eligibility: All applications received will be scrutinized based on information provided/uploaded in the application forms. This scrutiny is to check whether the applicant meets eligibility criteria mentioned above. Only those applicants who meet the eligibility criteria and pass the scrutiny will be considered for Stage 2 (Entrance exam).

Stage 2 - Shortlisting of applicants based on entrance exam: All eligible applicants will be called for an entrance exam. This stage includes shortlisting of applicants qualifying for Personal Interviews. The shortlisting will be based on a merit list prepared using the following criteria of academic performance and entrance exam:

*Note: In case last semester results are pending then percentages till the penultimate semester will be considered.

Top 250 applicants will be called for Stage 3 (Personal Interview). Please note that at this stage all reserved category applicants who have appeared for the exam will be called for the personal interview process.

Stage 3 - Evaluation through personal interview: The personal interviews for all shortlisted applicants will be evaluated by a panel of faculty members using the below-given criteria and weightages:

Stage 4 – Preparation of merit list:
A consolidated merit list will be prepared by adding the marks of the academic performance and entrance exam (stage 2); and marks of personal interview and work experience (stage 3). This means that consolidated merit list will be based on marks obtained in all the 4 criteria given in the tables of Stage 2 and 3. Note that single merit list will be generated for all M.Tech. programs excluding BEP.

The entire consolidated merit list of the applicants interviewed will be displayed on the CEPT website. Applicants will be called based on their rank in merit list for counseling (Stage 5) at CEPT campus.

Stage 5 – Counseling: Counseling will be held at CEPT campus. A selected number of applicants will have to come in person to the campus on the day of counseling. Applicants will be offered seats in all three M.Tech. programs based on availability as well as eligibility criteria and will have to choose one to get admission in that particular program. In case of not getting admission in a program as per his/her choice, he/she will have to fill up preference at the time of counseling only. In case of any vacancy in particular program in future, vacant seat will be filled by next eligible candidate based on preference filled.

Student Financial Aid

Please be informed that you can avail Pre Admission Scholarship (Means cum Merit) by filling up the scholarship form. Scholarships ranging from 25% to 75% of the annual tuition fee will be awarded to selected students from among the eligible applications.


Last date for submission of Scholarship is 20th April 2018


Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Students with family income less than Rs. 10 lacs per annum are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
  • Recipients of the scholarship will continue to receive the scholarship for the full duration of the program subject to maintaining a minimum 2.7 SGPA (the equivalent of B-) in every semester and completing all courses in the first attempt.


Important Instructions:

  • University holds the right to reject the scholarship application, in case of absence of any required supporting documents to be submitted by the applicant.
  • The award of the Scholarship will be announced along with your Admission Offer Letter, however, the amount will be disbursed after one month from the beginning of semester/lectures.
