Program Description

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The University of Notre Dame Australia

Why Study at Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame Australia is proud of its small classes and caring community atmosphere as well as its commitment to excellence, pastoral care and social justice. The University is able to offer a uniquely personal approach to teaching and learning. As a consequence, Notre Dame can assist students to develop skills and confidence to enable them to succeed in their chosen field. Also, because Notre Dame is a town university, students have access to all the social, sporting and cultural activities Fremantle has to offer, making learning both an educational and a cultural experience.

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

It has been standard practice in teacher training for students with relevant undergraduate degrees to proceed into a one-year Graduate Diploma in Education (Dip Ed) to gain a qualification to teach.

Notre Dame has a two-year Master of a Teaching programme that more than doubles the amount of practicum of a Diploma of Education and allows students to take a more graduated approach to the in-school development of teaching competence. There are two school experience opportunities over the two years of the course (Master of Teaching (Primary)), totalling 20 weeks of classroom practice: term two in the first year and term three in the second year.

The undergraduate degree must be in a discipline/s relevant to the secondary school curriculum and provide sufficient content depth for a teaching major (up to Year 12) and a teaching minor (up to year 10 level).

The Primary teaching courses at Notre Dame provide students with:

  • An extensive school experience component amounting to 20 weeks of in-school time over two years
  • Strong supportive mentoring arrangement
  • Ability to teach in all Learning Areas of the Curriculum Framework
  • A focus on the Curriculum Framework and learning outcomes
  • The strong integration of theory and practice
  • Coursework that is contemporary, practical, interactive and focused on problem-solving
  • Professional reflection on practice
  • Attainment of employer, government and registration requirements
  • Exposure to emergent learning technologies
  • Accreditation to teach Religious Education in a Catholic school (if desired)
  • Requirements to teach in a Catholic school (if desired)

Mode of Study & Assessment

Students may undertake a study as a part-time or full-time student, commencing in the first semester (February), in winter term (June) or in the second semester (July), subject to unit availability. The assessment of competency in each unit consists of tutorial performance, a number of assignments or projects during the semester and a final examination.

Practical Component

A unique feature of the degree is that two units focusing on teaching methods are completed in conjunction with the school experience programme. Specialist teachers take these units after school hours. This gives students the benefit of the experience of practising teachers and allows students to relate the teaching methodologies examined directly to their observation and own teaching practices.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Notre Dame find employment in Catholic, Independent and Government schools and have a high rate of employment success.

Admission Requirements

Applications should be received at least one month prior to commencement. However, there are limited places available in the graduate courses, and they will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis, so early application is encouraged.
