Plymouth State’s General Special Education certification programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and aligned with the National Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standards.

Coursework in special education address competencies in such areas as classroom management, a survey of exceptionalities, human development, foundations, assessment, and teaching strategies. Our experienced faculty will address issues such as development and characteristics of learners, learning differences, instructional strategies, special education law, and language.

Degree Options

Students may choose from the following options:

  • MEd in Special Education, K-12 General Special Education Certification
  • MEd in Special Education, K-12 General Special Education Certification - One Year Intensive
  • MEd in Special Education (non-certification)
  • MEd in Special Education, K-12 Learning Disabilities Certification
  • MEd in Special Education, K-12 Administrator Certification

Admission Requirements

Admissions requirements for the MEd in School Counseling, K-12 Certification requires the following materials to be submitted through our online application

  • 3.0 or better in undergraduate coursework
  • Official transcripts from any/all college-level work
  • Three professional recommendations
  • Current Resume
  • Statement of interest
  • NH Residency Verification form (NH residents only)
  • $75 application fee

Additional requirements for the One Year Intensive program

  • Successful completion of undergraduate degree in K-3, K-8, K-12, 5-12, or 7-12 teacher certification or related educational field
  • Interview with program coordinator
  • Application deadline of May 15 for cohort that begins in early June

Additional requirements for Special Education Administrator K-12 Certification

  • Previous certification in K-12 General Special Education
  • Three years teaching experience
