Programme overview

With a unique combination of perspectives from political science, social work, sociology and economics, this programme provides you with a broad range of knowledge and skills intended for the management and administration of welfare services. The courses are based on a comparative approach, highlighting differences and similarities across countries, administrative levels and policy areas, including a European Union perspective.

Knowledge and skills acquired on the programme:

  • In-depth knowledge of welfare regimes in different parts of the world
  • A basic understanding of public economics, leadership and management in relation to welfare services
  • The ability to apply techniques for evaluating public and private welfare programmes
  • Advanced analytical and methodological skills.

Programme modules

The programme includes a total of 120 credits divided into courses of 7,5 or 15 credits each and a Master’s thesis of 30 credits.

  • First semester, autumn: Welfare Regimes in Transition. Comparative perspectives on policies, management and reform. Joint introduction (15 credits) & Organization, Leadership and Management (7,5 credits) & Evaluation and Welfare Management (7,5 credits)
  • Second semester, spring: Economics: An introduction to Public Economics (15 credits) & Elective courses or Internship for the second half of the term (15 credits)
  • Third semester, autumn: Course in your major subject; Political Science, Social Work, or Sociology (15 credits) & Research methods: Political Science Methodology (15 credits)
  • Fourth semester, spring: Master’s thesis, 30 credits

Career prospects

The programme prepares you for advanced welfare management work in roles such as policy formulation and decision making at the local, regional, national, European or international level. A degree in Welfare Policies and Management can also lead to employment in the private sector, such as non-governmental institutions or profit-making organisations. In addition, the programme prepares students for doctoral studies and a continued academic career.
