A two-year graduate program with a focus on topics related to sustainable environment, including the effects of human development, pollution, and population growth.
HBKU’s master’s in sustainable environment provides students with extensive knowledge in topics that are related to sustainable environment issues, including the effect of human development: the causes, impact and control of pollution, and the demands of a growing global population on natural resources. Students conduct original, guided environmental research that concentrates on issues surrounding the support of sustainable development. The multidisciplinary approach to the curricula builds fundamental knowledge that evolves with the developments within the field, equipping graduates with the tools needed to pursue a wide variety of career paths.
Through the program, students focus on a core set of skills that are required to build a successful career in science, engineering, and technology-related areas, including ethics, technical writing, research methods, data analytics, and advanced computing methods.
Areas of concentration include:
- Fundamentals of sustainable development and human-environment interactions related to policy, engineering, and technology, as well as the fundamentals of environmental processes.
- Water demand, resource management, and treatment processes.
- Emissions and waste sources: their transport through land, air and water, their relationship to human activity, and their impact on human health and the environment.
- The environmental impact of human activities such as urban development, buildings, energy generation, water treatment, and manufacturing from a life cycle perspective.
- The interrelationships between water, energy and food, and how to ensure their resilience and security through a nexus-based approach.
A 33-credit full-time program, taught in English over two years that includes:
- 3 Core courses
- 3 Elective courses (+1 additional course if taking industrial project)
- 2 Semesters of graduate research seminars
- 1 Nine-credit research thesis or six-credit industrial project
Admission & Application Requirements
- Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree relevant to this program, which typically includes science and engineering disciplines. Students from architecture, urban planning, business, economics, policy, and social sciences demonstrating strong analytical skills will also be considered. Applicants with prior research experience are preferred.
- Applicants are required to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam in order to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Applicants can be exempt from this requirement if they meet one of the conditions listed below:
- The applicant completed their studies at an institution in a country where English is the native language
- The applicant provides an official letter from the university where they completed their undergraduate studies confirming that they obtained their degree from an institution where the medium of instruction is English (if not otherwise exempt)
- The applicant's first language is English
- While the GRE is not required for admission to the program, a strong GRE score will help strengthen the applicant’s admission material.
