Master of Science in Mathematics
The MSc in Mathematics provides students with a strong background in disciplines such as analysis, algebra, topology and modern applications in computational fields. It ensures that students have the appropriate training necessary to make career choices from a wider range of options after completing the program.
Through a variety of seminars, workshops and presentations, students are introduced to the essential ingredients of doing research as well as a variety of open problems. The program consists of coursework, seminars and a Major Research Paper, which is completed within a year.
The Major Research Paper focuses on an open problem in Mathematics, which could be theoretical or applied in nature. Students are asked to learn about an unsolved problem by researching its history and the contributions of other mathematicians towards solving the problem. Full-time and part-time study is available.
Applicants must hold an Honours BSc normally in Mathematics or in a combined honours program with a Mathematics major and at least a 75% average on the last ten full (20 semesters) courses completed at the time of application, or equivalent qualifications to be considered for admission. All applicants are required to provide at least two letters of academic recommendation from professors or other appropriate professionals who can speak to their level of preparation and readiness for graduate studies. Reference cannot be from anyone who is personally related to the applicant.
All applicants are required to provide a resumé. Applicants are also be required to write a statement about their research interests and desired area of research.
Applicants may also be asked to submit supplemental information, such as English language proficiency scores as appropriate.
