General purpose

To train teachers, researchers and professional cadres with a high academic level in the area of Materials Science.

Specific objectives

  • Contribute to the training of specialized human resources that the country requires in the area of Materials Science.
  • Train students in the research activity.
  • Participate effectively in the resolution of technological problems that arise in the social and productive environment of the region and the country, in the scope of the research lines of the program.

Egress Profile

The graduates will have updated knowledge in the area of Materials Science, and a solid theoretical and / or experimental training in the specific field in which they developed their research work. This training will train them to:

  • Apply a wide range of methods and techniques to solve scientific and technological problems in their field of knowledge, both in the academic and in the productive field.
  • Handle critical scientific and technological information from different specialized sources.
  • Participate in the development of research projects in the area of Materials Science and related.
  • Effectively perform tasks of teaching and dissemination of knowledge, thereby contributing to the training of human resources

How to enter this postgraduate course?

Entry requirements

  • Application for admission according to the indicated format.
  • Letter of explanation of the student's reasons for studying the program.
  • Professional title or examination certificate to obtain the degree / internship letter and letter of commitment to obtain a degree.
  • Certificate of qualifications of professional studies with average.
  • Official document that endorses 450 TOEFL points.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors of recognized academic trajectory.
  • Birth certificate original and copy.
  • Copy of official identification; elector credential for Mexicans; passport for foreigners.
  • Three photographs child size.
  • Pass the entrance exams (general knowledge of chemistry, physics and mathematics).
  • Interview with the evaluation committee.

Admission profile

The program is aimed at graduates of bachelor's degrees in science or engineering, interested in materials sciences. Applicants must have an acceptable background in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and demonstrate a strong interest in research activities.

What do you need to get the degree?

Qualification requirements

To obtain a master's degree, you must:

  • Approve the total of credits and other requirements established in the Study Plan.
  • Have passed at least Level 5 of the English language in the Department of Foreign Languages of UNISON or its equivalent (480 institutional TOEFL points in force).
  • Have an updated CVU on the CONACyT portal.
  • Have evidence of no debit issued by the Research Department in Polymers and Materials and deliver the documents requested by the Coordination.
  • Have an article sent or a paper in a national or international academic event related to the research work. When there are several students involved in the aforementioned products, they can only be used for one student.
  • Have completed the thesis project and have the corresponding manuscript approved by the jury.
  • Approve basic knowledge exam where the student presents scientific material (article, chapter of book or other) related to his thesis topic.
  • Pass the thesis project presentation exam.

Titration options

Alternative scheme for obtaining the degree

Students who have at least one article published or accepted within the 4 semesters of the program, may be titled by an alternative to the traditional scheme, which involves a written phase and an oral phase, but where the written phase does not correspond to the conventional thesis manuscript.

Written phase : Consists in the preparation of a manuscript that must contain the following elements: 1) Cover, 2) Index, 3) Summary, 4) Abstract, 5) Introduction, 6) Background, 7) Materials and Methods, 8) Results and Discussion: this section will correspond entirely to the articles published and / or accepted, 9) Conclusions 10) Perspectives and Recommendations, 11) Bibliography and 12) Annexes (summary of products obtained: publications, presentations, etc.). The manuscript must be submitted to the thesis jury for review and approval.

Note: to be able to present the exam corresponding to the defense of the degree, it is required to have the approval of each of the members of the thesis jury.

Oral phase : a) Presentation of the Thesis Seminar (knowledge examination) and b) Defense of the Thesis Project.

From the characteristics of the article:

  • The student must appear as first or second author.
  • The content of the article should correspond to the research work of the master.
  • The thesis supervisor must appear as co-author.
  • The article must be published in a journal of international circulation, indexed and of strict arbitration. Proceedings will not be accepted.
  • When there are several students involved in the mentioned products, the article can only be used for a master's student.
  • The article must be delivered to the academic committee of the graduate, so that it is able to review and authorize that the material complies with all the aforementioned requirements.

Registration and tuition fees

Students, when enrolling in any of the graduate programs, must cover the corresponding fees according to the current minimum wage in the city of Hermosillo, as established in the Quotas Regulation.
