Master of Science in Integrative Genomics
Integrative Genomics is an interdisciplinary graduate program that combines genomics, ecology, evolution, and physiology to better understand the evolutionary forces that have shaped the mechanisms that are important to species interactions in the wild. The program is designed to provide those seeking a Masters degree the necessary skills and concepts to work cooperatively with others in a research area that takes a systems-wide approach and incorporates an organism’s history and natural environment to understand the organization and expression of its many genes. Exposure to modern techniques and instrumentation in the laboratory and field prepares students for success in both academic and other biotechnology-related pursuits.
The program has two tracks:
- Thesis track requires at least one satisfactory and relevant manuscript from original research for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Non-thesis track substitutes an internship with a relevant biotech company or the equivalent (e.g., Environmental Protection Agency laboratory) and one course in business marketing and management.
All students enrolled in the program take 12 credits from the core curriculum, and at least 8 credits from the list of electives.
Overview of the MSIG Program
A Master of Science degree in Integrative Genomics is a new area of biological research that seeks to place the functional significance of an organism’s many genes into an ecological and evolutionary context. Integrative Genomics allows scientists to understand the success story that each species represents.
Black Hills State University's MSIG program provides many unique opportunities:
- Location: We are situated in the Black Hills, which provides a natural laboratory for Integrative Genomics. We are also close to the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at Homestake Mine, allowing for collaboration with other major universities (to study, for example, the meta-genomics of the unique microbial communities found in extreme environments).

Successful applicants will be required:
- To have completed a Bachelor’s degree in either biology or chemistry with at least a 3.0 GPA and at least one course in genetics.
- To take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (the general test only; the advanced subject test is optional)
- To provide two letters of recommendation from former instructors.
- To submit a Statement of interest
- To provide TOEFL results (if your most recent academic degree is from a university where English is NOT the primary language of instruction)
- To complete and submit an application - there is a $35 application fee.
All students enrolled in the program take 12 credits from the core curriculum, and at least 8 credits from the list of electives. The core, which should be completed in the first year of study, is designed to provide a current overview of the field and techniques. The electives provide additional relevant emphases. Additionally, students will attend a weekly invited seminar series.
