The graduate program in Family and Consumer Sciences leads to the Master of Science degree. The program is designed to serve the needs of qualified students preparing for Family and Consumer Sciences careers in business, education, hospitals, industry, government, community agencies, and for entering adoctoralprograminFamily and Consumer Sciences or in a related discipline.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the M.S. degree in Family and Consumer Sciences requires the student to have a baccalaureate degree in Family and Consumer Sciences or an allied area and meet entrance requirements for graduate school. In addition to entrance requirements for the graduate school, satisfactory scores on the General Section of the Graduate Record Examinations(GRE) must be submitted.

SPECIFIC DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

For the M.S. degree the student must fulfill one of the following options:

  1. THESIS OPTION - (30 hours to include thesis)
  • Core Requirements (9 hours)
    • FACS 6300 - Current Issues in Family and Consumer Sciences(online)
    • FACS 6335 – Evidence-Based Research in Nutrition (online) OR ASTL 6380 Research Methods OR
    • HSC 6379 Research in Health(Online)
    • FACS 6350 – Statistical Methods in FACS (online) OR ASTL 6382 - Educational Statistics(online)
  • Thesis Research (6 hours)
    • FACS 6344 - Thesis Research I
    • FACS 6345 - Thesis Research II (The procedures for selecting and writing a thesis will be the same as prescribed in the current Graduate Bulletin.)
  • Specialization Track (12 hours)
    • Students will select one of the specialization tracks listed on page 2.
  • Elective (3 hours) - Electives in an allied area approved by major advisor
  • Additional Requirements
    • Thesis: Must be read and approved before the candidate is scheduled for the oral defense.
    • Oral Defense: Candidate with meet with the Thesis Committee for an oral examination or defense of the thesis. A majority of the student’s committee must approve the thesis and its defense. If approval is denied, the candidate will not be recommended for graduation. In this event, the student may be reexamined at a later period, no sooner than two months after initial examination.
    • Recommendation: If both the written thesis and oral defense are approved by the Thesis Committee, the candidate will be recommended to the Dean of the Graduate School for graduation.
    • Graduate portfolio: The portfolio is required to be completed at least three (3) weeks prior to graduation. Contact the department chair for guidelines and directions.

NON-THESIS OPTION (36 hours)

  • Core Requirements (9 hours) - Same as for thesis option
  • Specialization Track (15 - 18 hours)
    • Student will select one of the specialization tracks listed on page 2
  • Electives (9 - 12 hours) - Electives in an allied area approved by major advisor.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Written comprehensive examination: To be eligible to take the examination, the student must be within six (6) hours or less, of completing degree requirements of the semester in which the comprehensive examination is scheduled. Contact the department chair for guidelines and directions.
    • Graduate portfolio: The portfolio is required to be completed at least three (3) weeks prior to
    • graduation. Contact the department chair for guidelines and directions.
