Central technology of the future

Lightweight construction is regarded as the central technology of the future: in vehicle technology, aerospace technology, energy technology, architecture, medical technology and even electronics. In times of scarcer resources, climate change and the necessary reduction of CO2 emissions as well as the increase of the efficiency of machines and plants, special know-how is needed. This is offered on the master program "Mechanical Engineering - Lightweight Construction" - guided by the motto "green, safe, comfortable", which is written throughout the course of studies.

Project-based learning

The contents of the study are varied and extend from areas such as Generative Design and Bionic Design to composite materials (Composite Materials) to Additive Manufacturing. The students get to know the most important modern production technologies up to 3D printing. Simulation-supported construction in combination is a special competence focus on the degree program, which students acquire in practice-oriented courses. The program design relies on project-based learning to combine the theoretical knowledge with the practical skills in the best possible way.

A close-to-reality preparation for practice also includes dealing with the development of prototypes, which represents an important part of the Master's program in Mechanical Engineering Lightweight Design. Design, design and implementation of complete, complex systems are integral parts of the study, which is characterized by a focus on constructive lightweight construction. As a basis for the specialized technical subjects, students build the necessary basic knowledge in calculation and design, material technologies, FEM simulation (Finite Element Method), Generative Design, Bionic approaches and construction and materials testing. This broad expertise is rounded off by the areas of simulation and validation, which are among the specialties of the degree program.

  • They know the characteristics of lightweight steels and light metals, of polymer materials and composite materials, and know how they are manufactured and processed.
  • They know about mathematical, physical, strength theory and constructive methods for the calculation and design of lightweight components.
  • They can also design components and joints under dynamic or oscillating load and also with consideration of corrosive effects.
  • They are very familiar with the finite element method for different application fields, bionic and generative design, topology optimizations and can use 3D printing technology specifically.
  • They check equipment for faults, service them and optimize them.
  • They analyze and simulate highly dynamic, transient processes.
