The Research Master's in Child Development and Education is an intensive, selective two-year programme that trains students to become researchers in the field of parenting, education and child development.

Studying Child Development and Education at the University of Amsterdam

The Research Master's programme in Child Development and Education trains students to conceive, design, conduct and report high-quality research in the field of child development and education. The programme has been developed for excellent students who are motivated to conduct research and who intend to pursue academic research careers in child development and education. Research Master's students acquire in-depth disciplinary knowledge, familiarity with relevant research methodology and practical experience in carrying out research. The programme takes two years to complete. In both years students take courses and gain experience in conducting research.

Research facilities

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam has a strong tradition in empirical research and in connecting teaching with the practice of research. In learning to develop their research skills at the Department of Child Development and Education, students will benefit from the department's extensive experimental research facilities, among which video-monitored observation rooms, a baby lab and an ERP research lab equipped with facilities for taking electro-physiological measurements.

Students may also participate in observational and interventional research in families or classrooms, in large-scale skills-testing research on children and adults, or in conducting educational surveys using questionnaires for different target groups.

Accreditation and degree

The quality of this Master's degree has been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally recognised Master of Science (MSc) degree in Child Development and Education.

The programme takes two years to complete.

In order to graduate, students must attain 120 ECTS credits.

A distinction is made in the curriculum between:

  • disciplinary courses

Career prospects

Following successful completion of the programme, students are qualified to apply for an existing PhD project or to create their own PhD project by submitting a PhD project proposal and applying for a research grant.

Students can also apply for a position in applied research, such as in the Kohnstamm Institute or UvAminds. Such positions often lead to a PhD degree.

Students may also find research jobs elsewhere, such as in the public or private sector (e.g. with commercial research agencies).
