Overview

Do you wish to work in banking, finance or insurance? Or is perhaps the transport, consultancy, telecommunications or energy business more tempting? The Master of Science in Business Administration is one of the most multifaceted programs internationally and welcomes students with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or similar.

In this program, students will learn how to tackle questions such as: How to target the desired audience? Whom to collaborate with and how do I set up a successful organization? Depending on the specialization the students will furthermore get an insight into how innovation processes work in the economy and how they are perceived by society.

The Business School at the University of Stavanger (UiS) has close contact with the Norwegian business sector, which in the Stavanger region also has extensive international relations. The UiS Business School plays an active role in research both internationally and regionally. Our students are very active and cooperate with a number of companies and organizations in the Stavanger business community.

Economics

A specialization in economics will set you up with competence and research tools to analyze economic behavior and relationships in business, for the public sector, and for society at large. You will be capable of conducting competent analyses of business cycles and capital markets, labor markets and wage formation, environmental economics, and energy markets. Within in the economics profile, we have two tracks for sub-specialization, namely motivation and labor markets and/or energy, resource, and environmental economics. A specialization in economics will offer career opportunities in private businesses (finance, industry, energy) and in the public sector (local and central government, directorates).

Applied Finance

A specialization in finance will prepare you for work with the financing of investment and operations of private and public enterprises. Relevant themes include capital structure, valuation of assets and investment projects, evaluation of M&A decisions, as well as various types of capital (fund) management. This specialization also offers specific competence in corporate organization and governance, as well as processes related to acquisitions and divestitures. You will be introduced to methods and tools that form the basis for valuation and investment decisions in various types of businesses and financial institutions. With a specialization in finance, you are highly relevant for job opportunities in banking, capital management, and corporate finance.

Strategic Marketing and Analytics

A specialisation in in strategic marketing and analytics provides you with knowledge of marketing from a strategic perspective and enhances your strategic capabilities and skills.

The program blends knowledge of strategy and marketing science with a data-analytic approach to decision making. This applied program allows you to address real-world business challenges by learning from word-class faculty who knows you by name, working in teams on business cases, and engaging with industry through lectures by industry experts and work-integrated learning experiences. The career specialisation in strategic marketing and analytics is built on the principles of an engaged collaborative learning community, where your fellow students, faculty, industry, and alumni form your network of personal and professional relationships, enabling you to achieve your professional goals throughout your career.

Business Innovation

A specialization in Business innovation gives you a deeper understanding of the significance of innovation for companies, industries, and society at large. You will be introduced to the structure and anatomy of innovation processes, how strategy and organization influence the capacity and ability to innovate, as well as the role of companies in networks and systems that are important for innovation. Moreover, this specialization builds competence on the role of innovation of the economy, and how innovation can be studied and understood in a broader societal context. As future leaders and professionals, students on this specialization will be able to contribute to policy design and strategy formation to foster innovation both in private and public enterprises.

In order to give students depth and breadth within this program, students must select one area of specialization (major) and a set of elective courses which may constitute a minor. The specialist area and supporting area should both be within the area of business administration. It is possible, for example, to do strategy and management as a specialist area with economics or applied finance as a supporting area. Optional masters' courses are also offered, that add depth to the program. Note, however, that Norwegian requirements (NRØA) for the "siviløkonom" title specify a minimum of 20 ECTS outside the specialization area.

Learning outcomes

On completing the program, the student should have achieved the following:

Knowledge

  • Have advanced knowledge of at least two elements of business administration (scope requirement) and specialized insight into a particular area (specialism/major).
  • Have in-depth knowledge of scientific theories and methods connected with the specialist area.
  • Be able to apply knowledge to new areas within the area of business administration.
  • Be able to analyze professional issues based on the specialist area's history, traditions, distinct nature and place in society.

Skills

  • Be able to critically analyze a variety of information sources and apply them to construct and formulate professional arguments.
  • Be able to analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations within the area of business administration and work on practical and theoretical issues independently.
  • Be able to use relevant methods for research and professional development independently.
  • Be able to independently carry out a specialized research or development project under the supervision and in line with current research and ethical norms.

General competencies

  • Be able to analyze relevant professional, research and ethical issues.
  • Be able to apply own knowledge and skills to new areas to carry out advanced assignments and projects.
  • Be able to communicate information relating to extensive independent work and master the expressions and terminology related to the subject area.
  • Be able to communicate with specialists and the general public on professional issues, analyses, and conclusions within the subject area.
  • Be able to contribute to innovation and innovation processes.
