Master of Science degree in Accounting (MSc)

The M.S. degree in Accountancy prepares students for a wide range of employment opportunities in public accounting, industry, and finance, government and nonprofit organizations. The program is designed to produce individuals who are qualified with knowledge and techniques in one or more accounting areas: Accounting Information Systems; Financial and Public Accounting, including auditing and taxation; and Managerial and Cost Accounting. Graduates of the program are prepared to successfully challenge a professional examination for entry into the selected area; committed to professional and career development beyond their formal education into the highest executive levels of the selected area; capable of becoming leaders who exhibit high standards of ethical conduct within the profession; and prepared for doctoral study and research positions.

Requirements for the Degree (45 units)

A total of 45 units of 500-level courses are required. All programs must be approved by the department.

Admissions to Masters of Science Degree in Accountancy

Admission to the Graduate Programs MS Accounting at College of Business and Economics is a two-step process. Students must first be admitted to the University and then must satisfy the College's requirements for admission to graduate programs.

For admission to the University, applicants must have:

  • Submit an official CSU Graduate Application to the University
  • (You will need to create an account in order to fill out the application.)
  • A baccalaureate from an accredited institution, or equivalent academic preparation as determined by Admissions and University Outreach or another appropriate campus authority.
  • Two official transcripts, which must include verification of the bachelor's degree.
  • A grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (4.0=A) in their latest 90 quarter (or 60-semester) units attempted and good standing at the last college attended.
  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 80 (internet based test), 213 (computer version) or 550 (paper version) for those applicants who earned a bachelor's degree to a school where English was not the principal language of instruction.


In addition to University admission requirements, applicants to graduate programs in the College of Business and Economics must submit the following:

  • Separate Graduate Program Application to the College of Business and Economics.
  • (You will need to download the application and use MS Word to fill it out).
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 500 or higher. Applications for the GMAT and an explanatory pamphlet may be obtained at the College Advisement Center (SH 256B), or directly from the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 966, Princeton, NJ (1-800-462-8669) or online at (www.gmat.org). If GRE, a score of 1000 or higher is acceptable (www.gre.org).
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant's ability to pursue graduate studies. References from employers and faculty members are acceptable.

  • Detailed resume or curriculum vitae showing the applicant's work experience (two or more years full time)


The College examines each candidate's potential, taking into consideration all academic work experience, level of responsibility, and other factors that may have a bearing on the individual's potential for success. Applicants are evaluated on the merits of their own application in comparison with those of all other applicants for the quarter.

Applicants without proper documentation, i.e., official transcripts, test scores, employment history, essays, etc., will not be processed.
