The Master of Science (Tourism) is a one-year research-based programme. It prepares students nationally and internationally to advance their careers in teaching and research in higher education institutions, secure employment in specialist areas in the private and public sectors, and pursue their PhD degrees. Students will have an opportunity to work with highly qualified academics and share research ideas with fellow students from diverse backgrounds in an environment that encourages intellectual stimulation and research innovation.
Graduates of this programme will be fully equipped to conduct independent research on tourism-related issues.
The objective of this programme is in line with the government's aim to spur research and development in the country by increasing the scientists per population ratio. It will further produce specialised manpower to formulate strategic plans for the enhancement of services and products in the tourism industry. Through this programme, students will be able to demonstrate their ability, under supervision, to apply relevant research techniques to their chosen field of study. This programme strives to:
- Produce postgraduate students to meet the manpower needs of the tourism industry in the country.
- Develop students' logical and critical thinking skills in tandem with specialized practical skills that are required to formulate strategic plans within the tourism industry.
- Produce scientists with skills that are not only valuable to future employment in the field of tourism, but also transferrable to other avenues of employment. Prepare students to embark on related postgraduate studies that can provide better opportunities and advancement in relevant areas and a broader understanding of the principal areas of scientific research.

Minimum length of candidature
The minimum length of candidature is two years for full-time students and three years for part-time students. Candidature cannot be less than these periods.
Part-time students who are confident of graduating in under three years should register for full-time status at the end of the first year.
Maximum length of candidature
The average duration of candidature for full-time students is two years with a maximum of four years. Part-time students normally take three years to complete their candidature, with a maximum of six years.
Extension of candidature beyond the maximum period is only possible with the approval of the Senate and the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
Conversion of Master's Degree To Doctor Of Philosophy (PhD)
Taylor's University allows students registered in a Mixed Mode/Research Master's degree programme to convert their registration to gain direct admission into a PhD programme without having to first complete their Master's programme.
Students who wish to convert from a Master's registration into a PhD registration are required to fulfil the following requirements:
- Recommendation by the student's supervisors and approval of the School’s Postgraduate Committee
- Student must pass an oral examination for evaluation of the conversion application in front of a panel of examiners appointed by the School's Postgraduate Committee.
The application form for conversion of candidature together with the application processing fee must be submitted for processing.
Off-campus candidature enables working adults who have access to research facilities in the vicinity of where they work or reside to benefit from the experience of research supervision from the university. Below are the required requirements for off-campus candidature
- Payment of an application fee of RM500.
- Appointment of an external co-supervisor.
- Submission of a Research Meeting Log twice per semester for the University to monitor the research progress.
The application form for off-campus candidature must be submitted to Taylor's Graduate School for processing. The School's Postgraduate Committee will decide on the approval of the application.
