Master of Music Rhythmic Music Teacher
At the Academy, master’s students follow a 2-year university program in an artistic and research-based study environment. Master’s students compared to bachelor’s students develop their knowledge, skills and competences that make them able to initiate and execute music projects and educational training independently. The master’s education allows students to fulfil highly professional roles in the labour market. Additionally, this master’s degree program provides a foundation for further studies at Soloist study program.
Content and opportunities
The MMUS Rhythmic Music Teacher degree course at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, is a 2-year course during which students build upon the knowledge, skills, and qualifications as rhythmic musicians and teachers acquired during the BMus degree course. Taking their musicianship as a starting point, students immerse themselves in two or three supplementary main subjects in addition to the main instrument. Main Instrument Pedagogics may constitute one of these main subjects. The main subjects must correspond to at least 6 semesters of tuition, are selected from the main subject catalogue (q.v.), and incorporate a communicative aspect as well as a pedagogical course. Electives may also be added.
The degree course forms the basis for student choices in relation to their future careers as musicians and teachers. The master's degree also prepares students for postgraduate studies at soloist or PhD level.
The course structure
The degree course focuses on the student's main instrument and the supplementary main subjects chosen. Elective elements are also featured, primarily on the first year. The focus is also on the communication of music—in practice and in theory. The Entrepreneurial Studies subject is concluded after the 3rd semester and provides the student with relevant tools for administering his/her artistic and pedagogical ambitions through e.g. self-management and entrepreneurial skills.
The degree course concludes with a student-defined master's project which is based on student interests and needs and also constitutes their specialisation in the field of rhythmic music.
The course subjects are divided into the following fields:
- Main study area: Subjects where the student is a performer as well as subjects that support this aspect.
- Entrepreneurial Studies: Subjects and projects where students immerse themselves in the role as entrepreneurs and managers of dynamic processes and develop their career administration tools.
- Master's project: In addition to the project work itself and related guidance, students receive tuition in subjects that prepare them for the final project work.
