Cultural studies is an important study to observe current developments in society. Social changes in society involve culture as a determining factor. Culture is no longer a realm of its own, rather an integral part of social and political spheres. The social, culture, politics, economics and class are entities that intersect in a community's social constellation.

Located in East Java, the area representative to serve as the cultural basis of literature, either classical, modern, or contemporary, Master of Literatury and Cultural Studies Faculty of Humanities Airlangga University attempts to develop science in literature with cultural perspective. This program is distinctive because it lays the scientific development of literature in the context of the culture surrounding it. Offering two minors namely Literary studies and Cultural studies, this program focuses on local urban culture.
