A global perspective on governance
The Hertie School’s Master of International Affairs (MIA) is a 2-year, full-time programme in English that equips outstanding students and young professionals with tools of international policymaking to tackle global challenges and devise sound policy proposals in a global multilevel system. MIA graduates are well prepared for positions requiring a profound understanding of today’s global policy challenges in government, diplomacy and international organisations, as well as in the private and civil society sectors.
Policymakers and experts today are confronted with a wide array of global challenges. These range from a crisisprone global economy and its repercussions, to security challenges such as new regional instabilities, nuclear proliferation, cyber warfare, and conflicts over limited resources. To meet such challenges successfully in a rapidly transforming context, knowing how to navigate the complex landscape of diverse actors and disciplines is crucial.
Specialise in one area of international affairs
Students attend courses in global governance, international economics, international law and security policy. Interdisciplinary and problem-oriented teaching offer hands-on preparation that students can apply across borders, disciplines and sectors. A practice course in international conflict management and mediation supplements the curriculum.
Students choose between two concentrations:
- Finance and trade focus on the interaction between national and international economic institutions and their impact on growth, competition, trade or other factors such as energy supply.
- Security and sustainability are based on a comprehensive notion of security that includes issues such as poverty, human rights, climate change, as well as old and new geopolitical and military challenges.
In addition, students complete courses from a wide portfolio of electives to deepen their expertise in a specific policy field. They apply their analytical skills by writing their master’s thesis on a topic relevant to international affairs.
