A Master of Human Resource Management (HRM) degree from the University of Newcastle develops in graduates the knowledge and practical skills to become an effective, ethical and successful practitioner in human resource management (HRM) and/or employment relations (ER), working in business, government, consulting or community sector organisations.

Is it for you?
The Master of HRM program at the University of Newcastle carefully balances theory and practice. HRM and ER professionals work in roles as advisors to and advocates for, as well as managers of, people. In these roles, they are frequently required to find a solution to organisational challenges in the face of plural, often conflicting, interests and strongly held views. HRM and ER professionals must be able to put a strong and reasoned argument for a particular way forward, based on a deep understanding of relevant theory as well as a practical understanding of the problem and its context. In many ways, this will be their most critical role at work. The approach you will take to learning in this program builds mastery in this role, developing your confidence and competence and preparing you well for a career in HRM.
A Master of Human Resource Management through the University of Newcastle is designed to meet the diverse needs of students through:
- a research-led curriculum, taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers, supported by the Professor of Employment Studies
- strong engagement with the profession, driven by an active Industry Advisory Committee comprising representatives from business, unions, the public sector and government;
- use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and other active learning techniques to build collaborative, research, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and developing students’ confidence and competence;
- practical, ‘real-world’ exercises and assessments, drawn from a range of sectors, industries and countries, to better prepare graduates for their future workplaces; and
- on-line, blending learning and intensively taught course formats to optimise flexibility for students.
Surveys seeking student and graduate feedback on post-graduate programs have found that overall student satisfaction with the on-campus MHRM Program was 95% in 2011, and 92% in 2013. Staff members teaching in the MHRM program have received National, University and Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards, and use their strong relationships with government and industry to organise ‘real-world’ assessments, guest lectures, sites visits and research projects.
The Master of Human Resource Management program is comprehensive, contemporary and practical. It will develop your professional expertise in the processes and application of human resource management and employment relations. The program will provide you with depth of knowledge in the field and simultaneously build your skills in addressing workplace challenges, and developing and managing people.
Once having completed the Master of Human Resource Management at the University of Newcastle, you will be differentiated by your practical approach and problem-solving ability. You will be able to apply relevant, rigorous HRM and ER theory to a variety of contexts; and develop and implement evidence-based strategies to address individual, group and organisational challenges. You will be confident in your ability to know and apply the ‘rules’ of HRM and ER, and be able to deal with conflict constructively. You will be able to make a genuinely strategic contribution to the success of any organisation in which you work.
If you are looking to enter a management role, the Master of Human Resource Management program will give you the edge you need. Our graduates have gone on to work successfully in local, national and multinational organisations; in Australia, China, the Philippines, Botswana, Saudi Arabia, Germany and elsewhere; as HR or ER managers, consultants, policy-makers, and employee or employee representatives; and in sectors including mining, local and national government, banking/insurance, professional services, education, and manufacturing.

If you have more prior work experience, especially in HRM or ER roles, this degree will prepare you to lead others in a position such as:

- Organisation Development or Effectiveness Manager
- Employment Relations (ER) or Industrial Relations Manager
- Senior Consultant in an HR-related business
- Human Resources Director
- Senior Union official or Senior Employer Organisation Advisor
- Policy Advisor to government.
There are two pathways into the Master of Human Resource Management.
Direct entry into the Masters Program (120 units) will be available for applicants who have:
- 3 year Bachelors Degree in the discipline; or
- 3 year Bachelors Degree not in the discipline + 1 year relevant business experience; or
- At least 7 years business experience, including 2 years in a management position.
Students entering via this pathway are able to complete 4 courses per trimester, and are able to complete courses in any sequence they wish, that is consistent with course prerequisites. Applicants with an Honours degree in the cognate area or equivalent relevant qualifications at level 8 or above will be given appropriate recognition of prior learning.
The alternate pathway is through the Graduate Certificate (40 units) which will be available for applicants who have:
- 3 year Bachelors Degree not in the discipline; or
- 3 year Diploma in the discipline; or
- 3 year Diploma not in the discipline + 1 year relevant business experience; or
- 2 year Diploma in the discipline + 2 years relevant business experience; or
- 2 year Diploma not in the discipline + 3 years relevant business experience; or
- At least 5 years business experience.
Students entering via this pathway will be required to:
- Complete the Graduate Certificate over a minimum of two trimesters (typically 20 units per trimester); and
- Successfully complete a Business Academic Skills Program (BASP) which will be of 6 weeks duration. The BASP will be non-fee based and can be completed concurrently with courses in the Graduate Certificate.
- Only after the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate and the academic skills program will students be eligible to formally enrol in the Masters Program.
Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements
Applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement.
