The master of engineering in cybersecurity policy and compliance is an interdisciplinary program that draws courses from three areas of study across SEAS: computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and engineering management and systems engineering. The purpose of the online M.Eng.(CPC) degree is to capture the latest trends and issues from the field of cybersecurity to provide students the tools and skills necessary to stay at the forefront of this fast-changing discipline. The program is expected to attract prospective students with technical degrees, as well as those with nontechnical degrees who wish to study the complex issues of cybersecurity policy and compliance.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the George Washington University has been bringing together great minds in industry and government since 1884. Throughout this time, it has evolved to help professionals meet the technological challenges of the day.

The online Master of Engineering in Cybersecurity Policy and Compliance (M.Eng.[CPC]) follows this history, bringing a fully-online cybersecurity master’s degree to those seeking critical positions at the managerial level leading an organization’s cyber practices. The multidisciplinary curriculum incorporates a unique blend of engineering and computer science courses, making it well-suited for those with a technical or engineering background and project management professionals with a strong desire to protect proprietary information in the age of cyber warfare and global corporate espionage.

The online master’s in cybersecurity policy and compliance offers an engineering management-focused course of study, providing an overview of cryptography, security systems, algorithms, and software paradigms, a perfect choice for those interested in exploring the complex intersections between policy, business, and technology. Students of the program will become familiar with industry-recognized frameworks and methodologies as they train to take charge in the fast-paced world of information security.

Program Learning Objectives

The objectives of the online master’s program in cybersecurity policy and compliance are to ensure that graduates:

  • Analyze cyber incident forensics; forecast cyberattacks using predictive analytics modeling; and devise specific, actionable solutions that exceed traditional IT practices to emphasize cyber intelligence and mitigate risk by managing threat vulnerabilities.
  • Formulate cybersecurity policies by developing cybersecurity situational awareness procedures, identifying laws, and applying processes to safeguard sensitive data while sustaining enterprise operations.
  • Design an organization’s mobility solution that integrates mobile device management with industry best practices.

Access the Center of Cyber From Anywhere

George Washington University is a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research, designated by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, and a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance, designated by the National Information Assurance Training and Education Center.

Located in the nation’s capital, GW strives to promote a diverse educational atmosphere and develop unique forward-thinking programs, recruiting top faculty and tapping the expertise of industry and government contacts. SEAS’s online M.Eng.(CPC) program is aligned with the University’s mission—to prepare professionals to gain a deeper understanding of the discipline, to lead with purpose, to remain innovative in their approach, and to continue to apply critical thinking in new ways as career-oriented, lifetime learners.

The online Master of Engineering in cybersecurity policy and compliance at GW is designed for students who are working professionals—blending live class sessions with coursework that can be completed around other obligations. Students who are employed full-time will be able to apply the skills they learn on the job as they complete their online cyber security courses.

The program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate-level coursework. The program consists of four computer science courses and six others, focusing on policy, management, compliance and risk management—a blend that is designed to develop a well-rounded skill set in graduates. Even for those working full-time, all cybersecurity courses can be completed in roughly 2.5 years.

Upon graduation, online M.Eng(CPC) students will be able to:

  • Implement appropriate forensic analysis of cyber incidents, and use predictive analytics modeling to forecast cyberattacks, to devise solutions that go beyond traditional IT practitioners’ practices to delineate specific and actionable cyber intelligence.
  • Formulate short- and long-term cybersecurity strategies and policies for their enterprises by identifying compliance laws and applying the industry’s best practices.
  • Design an organization’s mobility solution that integrates mobile device management and the industry’s best practices.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive cybersecurity situational awareness procedure for an organization to safeguard sensitive data and sustain fundamental operations.
  • Implement methods of mitigating risk by managing threat vulnerabilities and exploits.
