Introduction
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree programs in educational leadership are designed to provide advanced professional studies in graduate-level coursework. The Master of Education is for candidates who are interested in becoming principals at various levels of K-12 schools. The Specialist in Educational Leadership is for candidates aspiring to district-level leadership positions or want advanced level professional development. Committed to excellence in student success, graduates of these programs will become well-qualified professionals as they further their knowledge of the functions of high achieving schools and school districts.
The skills and dispositions of dynamic educational leaders is framed through study in areas such as curriculum, instruction, management, personnel, finance, school law, public relations and the many facets of student achievement. They will be able to apply the theories and skills learned in the classroom to real situations. Numerous opportunities are provided to work with teachers, students, and experienced principals or district-level leaders in field experiences and learn how to meet the demands of leadership as educational leaders and administrators. The programs will prepare these school leaders to be committed to continuous growth because they will understand that the body of knowledge needed to lead schools is growing and changing. Graduates of these programs will be effective leaders who can create and maintain high-quality schools. Candidates must have one year minimum of teaching experience to be enrolled in the Master of Education program. The M.Ed and Ed.S programs include coursework which may be used to seek additional certifications of licensure add-on from the South Carolina Department of Education. To be licensed K-12, candidates should ensure that they have the accurate licensure certification(s) and the actual work experience at the desired / various levels.
