Master of Arts in Interaction Design Academic Year 21/22
The long-established international Master of Advanced Studies in Interaction Design SUPSI has turned into a Master of Arts, with a more appealing and comprehensive program exploring in depth the subject of Interaction Design. Its courses are crafted to offer a high quality and hands-on training that suits natural born-digital students and professionals.
Designing Advanced Artifacts, Environments and Services
The Master of Arts in Interaction Design combines design thinking, prototyping techniques, digital fabrication, programming, and physical computing in one study program addressing the realization of projects in which the interaction between the design culture and the technological development allows to generate design-driven innovations.
The program offers students specialized knowledge and skills of interaction design. A pragmatic problem-solving approach to design is applied in a laboratory environment. Peer to peer learning, iterative processes and the rapid prototyping of various solutions qualify the students to pursue careers in industry, research centers and design practices, wherever technological innovation and design meet.
The study program covers three semesters: it is structured in five modules, each of them scheduling a variety of design, methodological and technical courses.
The first semester focuses on in-depth workshops and courses about the Fundamentals of Interaction Design, whereas the second is dedicated to project-based learning about Designing Advanced Artifacts, Designing Advanced Environments and Designing Advanced Services.
The third semester is entirely dedicated to the thesis project: students have the opportunity to do hands-on research on their own project and develop their competences with an internship at companies and industries.
The Master of Arts diploma in Interaction design awards 90 ECTS.
Methods and Approaches
The educational model of the master focuses on methods and processes to generate innovations. Students have the opportunity to acquire Human Centred Design methods for the analysis and the solution of design problems and to autonomously practice research methods.
A pragmatic problem-solving approach to design is applied in workshop activities. Peer to peer learning, iterative processes and the rapid prototyping of digital and physical solutions qualify the students to pursue careers in industry, research and design agencies, wherever technological innovation and design meet.
Topics and Contents
Topics such as user experience design, service design, creative coding, tangible interfaces, open design, HCD methods and cutting edge technologies for data visualisation and Machine Learning are taught through design-driven courses that allow students to develop appliances, interactive installations, exhibitions and spaces exhibitions, web and mobile applications, digital services and ecosystems.
The courses are held by well-recognized interaction designers, computational designers and creative technologists in collaboration with an established network of organizations, research centers, design practices and companies. They allow the students to learn programming and physical computing, digital fabrication techniques, the use of web technologies and design tools to deliver working prototypes. Moreover, the program gives students the basic knowledge required to set up a business plan and sustain a pitch to investors in the event that they want to launch a startup.
The master’s program is addressed to students with creative talent combined with strong interest in topics and activities concerning the technological, social, and cultural context within which the future will be designed.
Application and Admission
The requirement for the acceptance to the Master of Arts in Interaction Design is a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design (graphic design, industrial design, interior design, media design, web design, etc). Students with a bachelor degree in fields such as architecture, engineering, humanities and fine arts are entitled to apply. Makers and innovators with a background in communication sciences and business management are also welcome to apply. If accepted, they have to obtain extra 10-15 ECTS by attending online courses or courses offered by SUPSI during the program.
Our objective is to form a group of multidisciplinary and international people who can harmoniously work with our lecturers and create an inspiring working atmosphere.
Students who complete the Master of Arts SUPSI in Interaction Design program will pursue careers at design agencies, industries, and startups worldwide. Students will work on innovative products and services in sectors where the digital transformation is a competitive advantage, such as media and web communication, ICT & digital services, e-commerce, consumer electronics, telecommunications, health & wellbeing, banking & finance, and the public sector.
Applications are open for the academic year 2021/2022
