As a student of directing, you will learn to create your own themes, forms, working methods, and dramatic language in the continuously changing field of theatre.
Here at the Theatre Academy of Uniarts Helsinki, the work of the director is viewed as an independent art form with the stage as its medium. The director creates artwork for the stage in close interaction with other creators of performance art and with an awareness of the surrounding reality. Central to the art of directing is the articulation of observations born in your own inner world and bringing these into dialogue with the outside world.
Directing is to ask questions, to visualize your own perceptions and thinking on the stage. It is giving birth to and leading, artistic processes and workgroups. It is an understanding of the contexts in which performance art is made. It is preparing performances that are anchored in their own time, making concrete the unspoken yet true understanding conveyed by art. To study directing is to develop your own perception and critical thinking, practicing how to verbalize and reflect on your own making and thinking as well as taking responsibility and engaging in artistic group work.
Directing studies begin with familiarizing yourself with the theoretical and practical premises of your chosen art form. Traditional and modern ways of approaching directing are applied to exercises, some of which are strongly governed by pedagogical goals while others allow students greater freedom to explore artistic interests and to develop their own language of stage expression. By reflecting on your own thoughts and actions, you will increasingly become aware of how your worldview is structured.
About the studies
The two-year master’s studies allow more freedom than bachelor’s studies, providing opportunities to engage in independent artistic work. You will actively participate in the planning and implementation of your own studies, as well as in developing the field of art that the degree program represents.
The defining theme running through master’s studies is the artistic question or area of interest that you have articulated by the end of your bachelor’s studies or by the time of applying to the MA program.
MA studies culminate in a thesis project, which showcases the individual artistic question of each student.
Our teachers are experienced experts in their field. In addition to the permanent teaching staff, the program welcomes top experts from both Finland and abroad as guests on a regular basis.
