The Master of Animation is a one-year, full-time program. It offers ambitious animators the opportunity to broaden their expertise and lay the foundation for a long-term, sustainable career in the creative sector.
A field brimming with possibility
Animation professionals work within an increasingly wide range of contexts. The program helps students navigate animation’s expanding field, which includes the essential role it has long played in the cinema, but also exciting new applications in design, games and interactive media. Students are challenged to find novel ways to enter these areas and to establish their own position within them.
The student’s self-directed research and studio practice are at the center of the program. We work with you to create substantial professional growth, based on your background, research path and ambitions. The program is geared towards animators and designers who have experience with the moving image.
You will be supported by a core faculty of active professionals, as well as guest tutors and speakers. In this critical and intimate environment, you will build technical skills, widen your conceptual scope and experiment with narrative strategies. Collaboration with other disciplines, both inside and outside the academy, is encouraged and facilitated.
What to expect
- One day a week is devoted to theoretical instruction in media and animation theory and academic studies.
- Two days a week are dedicated to presentations of work in progress and individual and group feedback sessions.
- An equal amount of time (2-3 days) is required for self-study.
Where you will study
The Animation Department is housed in a former seminary in historical Breda. Nestled within a small forest on the edge of the city, this inspiring location offers the space and focus necessary to deepen your practice. Lectures and critiques take place in a shared studio equipped with computers, and the academy has a vast array of workshops and resources, including a Motion Capture Suit and an Occulus Rift.
An international network
The program collaborates with designers, publishers and institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. Recent partnerships include PostPanic (Amsterdam), Eyesupply (Eindhoven), Submarine Channel (Amsterdam) and Fons Schiedon (New York). Our students come from all over the world, and are mostly animators and designers with some years of experience. A hallmark of the program is the yearly study trip to a foreign city. Düsseldorf, Barcelona and Paris are among the past excursions.
The Master of Animation is open to Bachelor of Animation and Bachelor of Illustration graduates, or similar practicing professionals in the field with experience in animation. Spoken and written proficiency in English is required.
