The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) aims to provide a broad-based course of study in the field of applied linguistics, mainly within the fields of language education and discourse studies. It is a useful means by which English language teaching professionals can acquire additional academic qualifications for career advancement.
The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) program focuses on the needs of English language teachers, curriculum specialists, school inspectors, school heads of departments and language lecturers of tertiary institutions. The program balances coverage of theoretical knowledge with practical application.
Participants will critically review current research in applied linguistics and develop a strong foundation in linguistics and language learning concepts. They will also have opportunities to apply their new knowledge to their specific language education contexts. As part of their overall professional development as language educators, participants will learn relevant skills for conducting classroom research.
There are two options within this program. Participants are required to either:
- Complete eight courses plus a dissertation (Dissertation option), or
- Complete 10 courses (Coursework-only option)
Participants selecting the coursework-only option will take a special course titled MMM 800 Critical Inquiry as one of the 10 courses, designed to act as a capstone experience for the program.
You do not have to make the decision when you apply. The decision on what option to select is usually made upon completion of six courses.
A good Bachelor's degree in English or a relevant field (with evidence of adequate knowledge in language studies) and at least a year of language teaching experience or such other qualifications and experience as the Academic Board approves.
The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) is offered on both a part-time and accelerated basis.
The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for part-time participants are 24 months and 48 months respectively.
