Master of Architecture in Architectural Design
Faculty of Architecture – CEPT University
The Architectural Design specialization within the M.Arch. program at the Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University is an advanced design stream intended for architects to explore, experiment and critically reimagine design as a discipline, empowered by the experience of practice. The specialization has a broader mandate compared to other M.Arch streams and allows students to explore the following themes - new tools and technologies of design, design for social change, reimagining the agency of architectural practitioners, among other things. Students also have opportunities to explore design theory, particularly in the realm of form and aesthetics, ways of making, computational design, history of design and contemporary practice.
Students joining this specialization are trained architects, often with considerable work experience. This specialization becomes an opportunity to reflect, discover new design processes or explore new trajectories outside of the exigencies of professional practice. In that respect, the specialization offers a unique opportunity to return to unhindered but structured and supported design exploration offered by the space of academia with an intention to cultivate relations between practice, historical knowledge, and theoretical debates.
The school offers student-architects the means to use their knowledge and insight to better respond to and improve the built environment, while always contributing to expanding the field of architecture and design in meaningful ways.
Studies in this stream are offered by a range of academic and practicing architects, and will thus have a balance of practice-oriented and theoretical explorations. CEPT's tradition of intensive creative pedagogy underpins the studies in this specialization as it does in the other streams. These studies are further supported by a range of courses that introduce students to paradigms of advanced design thinking on the one hand and specialist tools and techniques through working in the CEPT FabLab on the other.
