Building is a service to society, to people. Anyone who wants to implement construction projects successfully today and tomorrow has to bring more than just technical and technical expertise; economic, organizational and legal knowledge are also indispensable. The master program "Civil Engineering" imparts the necessary competencies for management tasks in planning or implementing important construction projects.

Mastering complex challenges

Competitive and time and cost pressures are steadily increasing, specialized personnel is becoming a bottleneck, new materials, processes and technologies are bringing challenges and opportunities. Together with increasingly important ecological requirements, all these factors make construction increasingly complex. Civil engineers have the task of succeeding successfully in this demanding environment - this is facilitated by a practice-oriented and strongly project-based training, which also prepares for a successful cooperation between client and contractor. In order to emphasize the international aspect as well, a semester abroad is gladly supported by the degree program.

The Master's program builds on the basis of a relevant Bachelor's degree in the field of "Civil Engineering", but the Master's program is also open to newcomers to related Bachelor's degrees. For them, separate credit transfer and transition models are created and offered.

The students make a fundamental choice between one of the two specializations "Design and Construction" and "Project Management". In addition, from the first to the third semester, students can further influence the design of their curriculum through the selection of optional electives offered. The final diploma thesis is common to all students - it will be written in the fourth semester as completion of the master's program.

The construction laboratory

The construction laboratory of the FH Kärnten is located in the Technology Park of the city of Villach in the Science

The students of the FH Kärnten will also be offered the opportunity to complete their bachelor and master theses in the laboratory and to participate in a wide range of research topics such as the subsequent reinforcement of existing bridge structures or the material development of high-strength and ultra-high-strength materials. In addition, the construction laboratory offers innovative services in the field of component and material testing.

In the current CHE Ranking (Center for Higher Education Development) , the Civil Engineering degree program at the FH Kärnten is rated very good and can position itself in second place!
Exceptionally good results were obtained in the undergraduate degree program "Civil Engineering" in all bachelor's degrees. Eg general study organization, teaching, support and support during studies, examinations, stays abroad, offers for career guidance as well as IT equipment, practical relevance, laboratories, excursions etc.


The master's program "Civil Engineering" is aimed at graduates of a relevant Bachelor's degree program as well as beginners from related bachelor's degrees. The goal of the program is to prepare students for taking on management responsibility in the construction industry. Depending on the area of specialization, further-reaching economic and organizational skills or constructive and Baukultur skills are increasingly conveyed. The program design is characterized by great practical relevance and aims at a quick career entry. Students can choose between two options:

  • The specialization design and construction deals with design and modeling, as well as with the calculation and planning of structures of civil engineering and infrastructure construction. The inclusion of the design in the training is the basis of the involvement of the engineer (structural engineer) in the design process of the structures.
  • The specialization project management focuses on the structural and organizational aspects of civil engineering. It teaches management skills that are closely linked to the legal, business and construction sectors. An important addition is the teaching of social skills such as leadership and leadership.

The essential contact to the economy is accelerated especially by a cooperative project work in the 3rd semester. Here, students have the opportunity to work on their tasks within a period of at least 5 weeks in and with a cooperating company. If you want to devote yourself to research topics instead, the construction lab is open to you: Scientific questions can be dealt with there, also within cooperative research projects, with professional support. Further offers to the students include participation in conferences, specialist conferences and external lectures - the program encourages students to independently form a network of subject matter experts during their studies.

  • Depending on the chosen specialization, they have broad competence in the areas of building construction or construction technology and construction management and can effectively bring these into practice. They are aware of the importance of sustainable thinking and acting.

  • They are able to communicate professionally and engage in dialogue with all major stakeholders in the construction process.

  • They are able to independently analyze problems of their areas of responsibility, to solve them with suitable methods and thus to participate in the successful implementation of construction projects.

  • Both in personal responsibility and as part of or in the management of a team, they work together smoothly with representatives from other professions and specialist areas.

  • They are in lively dialogue with the scientific community of civil engineers.


As Dipl.-Ing. In the field of civil engineering, you will find your place in the management functions of small enterprises and industrial companies, from statics office to major construction site, mostly in Germany but often also abroad.

Construction planning, construction execution or construction control are the higher-level task fields. By passing a subsequent civil engineer or master builder examination, you also gain the authority to independently manage planning and construction companies.

Being able to start doctoral studies at a technical university in Germany or abroad, as a graduate of the Master's program, also opens up scientific careers for you.

The fields of activity of civil engineers include planning, construction or construction control. The power to independently run planning and construction companies can be obtained by graduating from a civil engineer or master builder examination. It is also possible to build up a master's degree in civil engineering with a doctoral degree.

The name of a European engineer (EUR ING)

FEANI is the federation of European National Engineering Associations. Its Austrian representative is the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects (ÖIAV).

The civil engineering degree courses of the FH Kärnten are listed in the FEANI Index and thus provide the necessary basis for applying for the title of European engineer (EUR ING).

The FEANI member associations are authorized to award the EUR ING as proof of professional qualifications in the field of engineering beyond the European country borders. Especially for professional activities outside Europe, the EUR ING brings significant benefits in the recognition of professional status.

Prerequisite for obtaining the EUR ING is the proven combination of theory and practice through education and professional experience. The quality of the EUR ING certification is ensured by a three-stage examination process of submitted competences and experiences.


  • At least 3 years of study in engineering (INDEX degree program * or recognized equivalent degree program)
  • At least 2 years experience in engineering professions
  • At least 7 years of cumulative experience as an engineer through studies and work

Further studies

The successful completion of the Master's degree in Civil Engineering subsequently entitles to a doctoral degree in accordance with § 6 FHStG (4).

Of course, graduates of the master's degree in civil engineering can also go their own way after having taken their civil engineering or construction master's examination.
