Program Description

Master in Tropical and International Forestry

University of Göttingen

Master in Tropical and International Forestry (M.Sc. study focus)

The M.Sc. program Tropical and International Forestry focuses on sustainable management and conservation of forest ecosystems worldwide, especially in the tropical and subtropical forests of developing or emerging countries. Graduates of the program work in forest management all around the world, often in cooperation with international research and development organizations.

Along with the formal course-work, students gain intercultural work- and life-experience by interacting with international colleagues and professors. Experience has shown that personal and professional contact established during this MSc program is an excellent way to expand the students’ professional network.

Content and Organization

The MSc course is a 2-year program with a modular structure.
It consists of four different components: compulsory modules, elective modules, an interdisciplinary student project and a Master thesis.

Phase 1:
The first two semesters consist of lectures and coursework in Göttingen. Forest-related knowledge and methods are taught in compulsory modules. With various elective modules, students may specialize in some fields of forestry, gain interdisciplinary knowledge by choosing courses from other faculties of the university (e.g. Agricultural Sciences, Biology) or improve professional skills (e.g. foreign languages, soft skills)

Phase 2:
During the 3rd semester (winter term) an interdisciplinary student project is conducted abroad. The project deals with a problem specific to the project partner, e.g. agroforestry, reforestation, conservation, forest fires, soil protection. So far, projects have taken place in Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Malawi, Laos, and the Philippines. Additionally to the own research activities, the organization of the project and the ability to work in an intercultural context are of high priority.

Phase 3: After completing the project the students usually begin the field work for the final thesis in a country of their choice. Field research usually takes up to 3 months and is supervised by professors and experienced scientists.

Professional opportunities

The knowledge and experience gained through our interdisciplinary MSc program ‘Tropical and International Forestry’ qualifies and enables graduates to pursue a professional career in the following fields: international organizations (e.g. FAO, UNEP, World Bank, Asian Development Bank); wood processing industry; consulting and advisory activity e.g. in the field of certified wood, carbon sequestration, or watershed management; research and teaching at universities and international research organizations (e.g. CIFOR, ICRAF, etc.); non-governmental organizations; government development organizations
