Professional Opportunities

As experts in Computational and Simulation Techniques, graduates will be prepared to start a research activity leading to a PhD Thesis in Chemistry, Physics, Life Science or Material Science, as well as to face problems related to molecular design or modelling of physical-chemical, industrial or biochemical and biological processes and applications of Theoretical Chemistry and Molecular Modelling on different fields ranging from chemical reactivity, spectroscopy or catalysis to bioinformatics, materials science or polymers. Graduates will, therefore, be qualified candidates to join the pharmaceutical, petrochemical or new materials industries. They will, likewise, present an adequate profile to join other types of companies as computer experts (finance, information technologies, data mining, consulting firms, research and development companies, etc.).


Syllabus

The Master's Degree Study Plan is being submitted for verification. This might involve the change of the name and the study load of some subjects. If the verification is accepted, these enrolment parameters will need to be modified in line with the new situation

This Master's course is divided into two years: the first one to be taught at the University of Oviedo in 2012 and the second one at another European University from the 47 belonging to the consortium. Each course consists of 60 ECTS credits.

The first year of the Master's course is taught locally but its structure is basically the same in all the institutions of the Consortium. During the first year, 12 ECTS credits will be devoted to a leveling course: 3 ECTS credits will be dedicated to the improvement of a European language different from the student's native language and 30 ECTS credits will be dedicated to providing the student with a sound training in core aspects of the Master's course.

The course will consist of the following contents: Mathematics, Numerical methods and Programming, Molecular Quantum Mechanics, Group Theory and Spectroscopy, Statistical Mechanics and Reaction Dynamics.

The student will acquire this training in an Intensive Interuniversity four-week course. Professors of the intensive course are experts from the participating Universities. The teaching staff is expected to be changed on a rotating basis among the participating universities every two years.

The other 15 credits correspond to courses to be taken at the home institution and aimed at providing students with basic training in other fields of Chemistry so that it provides the basic knowledge in advanced aspects of Physical Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry and techniques of current chemistry (spectrometry, resonance techniques, etc.). This will be coordinated with the other Departments and knowledge areas.

The other 15 credits correspond to courses to be taken at the home institution and aimed at providing students with basic training in other fields of Chemistry so that it provides the basic knowledge in advanced aspects of Physical Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry and techniques of current chemistry (spectrometry, resonance techniques, etc.). This will be coordinated with the other Departments and knowledge areas.

Access Requirements

In order to register in an official Master's Degree, it is mandatory to have completed an official degree in Spain or in any higher education institution of a member state of the European Union integrated into the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that allows students to take a Master's Degree. Students who have obtained their degree outside the EHEA can be admitted as long as the University can verify that these qualifications have a similar level to the corresponding degrees in Spain and they permit graduates to take a Master's Course.

This Master's course is intended for holders of a bachelor degree and graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent willing to specialize in the development and use of computational techniques inherent to Theoretical Physics-Chemistry and Modelling of Physical and Chemical systems. However, other degrees of scientific nature will also be considered, provided that the student undertakes basic training under the supervision of a tutor.

Candidates must prove that they have an English language ability equivalent to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, such as the TOEFL exam with a minimum qualification of 213/550, the IELTS exam with a minimum level of 6 or any official certificate of a B2 level.
