Course description

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programme in Sustainable Forest and Nature Management (SUFONAMA) is a two-year worldclass integrated programme aimed at qualifying graduates for dealing with the enormous challenges in sustainable management of natural resources, namely the challenge of management of forests and nature areas in an integrated landscape context.

Programme Structure

The SUFONAMA Course consists of a first year at one of three institutions (Bangor, Copenhagen, Goettingen) and a specialising second year at one of the four other institutions.

The students are required to spend the second year at a different university than their first year. The aim of the first study year is to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable forest and nature management. The learning outcomes are similar at the three-first year institutions and allow students to choose freely among the five specialisation options in the second year. The first year ends with a joint summer module, conducted as a two-week excursion to one of the countries where the consortium institutions are located.

In the second year, you can specialise in one of the following topics:

  1. Conservation and land management (Bangor),
  2. Economic management of forests and nature (Copenhagen),
  3. Forest and Nature Management in a Changing Climate (Goettingen),
  4. Scandinavian and East European forestry (Alnarp),
  5. Mountain forestry and watershed management (Padova).

Each specialisation is based on the partner universities’ research strengths. The specialisation includes a master thesis based on research and fieldwork inside or outside Europe. The SUFONAMA Course thus offers a truly integrated study programme that is already fully recognised in all the participating countries.

When students have acquired 120 ECTS by studying at two consortium institutions (at least 60 ECTS at each) they will obtain a SUFONAMA double degree consisting of certificates from both institutions.
