Program Description

The MA in Regional and Territorial Development focuses on the analysis of regional and territorial issues, problems, contexts, challenges and development potentials.

This analysis is based on knowledge in this field of study and intervention affecting the economic, social and cultural, political, historical and geographical dimensions of development.

By studying the realities and experiences of Quebec and Canada, as well as elsewhere in the world, the program aims to better understand the collective dynamics and complex development processes in a changing local and global environment, thus enabling identify regional and territorial issues, challenges, approaches, practices, actions and interventions.

This program aims to empower students to scientifically analyze the various fields of action and the different dimensions of regional and territorial development.

The memory profile promotes the development of the research component of training through the deepening of knowledge in a field of specialization and the acquisition of skills as a researcher-analyst in regional and territorial development.

Specific objectives:

  • Acquire, in a multidisciplinary perspective, the theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge necessary to understand the problems, contexts, challenges, potential and challenges of regional and territorial development;
  • Understand the actions, interventions and problems of regional and territorial development mainly with regard to the Quebec and Canadian experiences and problems and, to a lesser extent, in relation to international issues.

An interdisciplinary program that addresses multidimensionality and intersectorality of development

Master in Regional and Territorial Development (with thesis)

Master's degree in regional and territorial development (with dissertation) includes a 21-credit course which allows to address the theoretical, methodological and practical dimensions of development.

It aims to provide training as a researcher-analyst in regional and territorial development.

This profile requires the completion of a research project (24 credits) to deepen a subject in the field of regional and territorial development studies. It also develops the skills required to pursue doctoral studies.

Master in Regional and Territorial Development (with test)

Master's degree in regional and territorial development (with test) is an interdisciplinary program with a 30-credit course that allows to address the theoretical, methodological and practical dimensions. It aims to provide training as an analyst-stakeholder in regional and territorial development in a reflexive and critical perspective.

This profile requires the completion of an analytical project (15-credit essay) to explore a theoretical issue or a practical problem of regional and territorial development. It also helps to develop the knowledge and skills required by the job market or to perfect those held in this area of expertise by professionals.

A profile with internship that promotes the acquisition of professional skills

The master's degree in regional and territorial development makes it possible to follow a profile with or without an internship. A research internship is possible in the memory profile, while an intervention internship is possible in the test profile.

This formula favors the acquisition of professional skills by carrying out a project meeting either a need for knowledge required by an organization (memory profile), or a need for intervention or an applied problem submitted by an organization (trial profile ).

Training to work in a wide variety of organizational contexts

Graduate programs in regional development train professionals who are able to analyze the complex situations faced by actors, stakeholders and decision makers involved in social, economic, political and cultural action at various territorial scales and able to formulate a diagnosis, critical appraisal and possible solutions to guide change and intervention.

Graduate graduates in regional and territorial development hold high-level positions, driven by the expansion of teaching, research, consultation, consultation, intervention or administration public debate on regional development issues.

Graduates of regional development occupy jobs in the following environments:

  • Public or parapublic bodies for local or regional development;
  • Provincial or federal ministries and municipal or supralocal public administrations;
  • Community organizations for consultation, intervention and development support;
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to the development of the territories and to the help of the populations;
  • Non-profit organizations with economic, social, political or cultural purpose;
  • Organizations dedicated to research and teaching (specialized centers, institutes, colleges and universities);

Canadian students

Step 1: Admission Requirements

  • Respect the deadlines for submission of admission applications.

  • Provide the necessary documents to process the application for admission.
  • Pay the admission fee.

Step 3: Demand Tracking

  • Receive the decision on the application for admission.
  • Register for classes.

Foreign students

Step 1: Choose your training

  • Choice of study program and campus.
  • Equivalence of diplomas and admission requirements.
  • Requirements for fluency in French.
  • Research Directorate, if necessary (research-type graduate programs).

Step 2: Check your financial capacity

Foreign students must ensure, before leaving their country of origin, to have the necessary financial resources to cover all the expenses of study and stay.

Step 3: Submit your application

  • Application for admission online.
    It is important to send all the required documents for the analysis of the application for admission as soon as possible. The Office of the Registrar of UQAR will not be able to process the application for admission without them.

Step 4: Obtain legal permissions to study in Canada

Foreign students admitted to a study program or exchange program for a period of more than 6 months must obtain the residence permit below.

Students admitted to a program lasting less than six months (a one-term program) are exempt from the CAQ and study permit. However, depending on the nationality of the candidate, a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) may be required to stay in Canada.

Applications for authorization are the responsibility of the candidate. UQAR can not intervene in this process, which is the exclusive responsibility of the ministries concerned.

Students must ensure that they have a valid passport when applying for a residence permit.

If student residence permits are not obtained in time for back to school, contact a foreign student advisor to evaluate options.

Step 5: Prepare to arrive in Canada

  • Health insurance and hospitalization.
  • Foreign Student Matching Program.
  • Reservation of accommodation.
  • Plan your itinerary to Rimouski or Lévis.
  • Head to UQAR .
