Master in Psychology (5 Years)

Psychology is a discipline whose goal is to understand and improve the functioning of individuals, groups, and societies as a whole. Students interested in the unitary "long-cycle" 5 year Master program are usually those who want to work as professional psychologists dealing with diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues (Clinical Psychologists) or in the business world, in marketing and advertising or human relations (Work and Organizational Psychologists).

For Whom?

Students of the unitary "long-cycle" 5 year Master program are willing to pursue their professional career in psychology with the knowledge, that in order to work as a psychologist you often have to gain credentials other than just the Master-level diploma. What is needed are competencies and skills gained during 5 years of study (300 ECTS) and, very often, a supervised training process. Specific requirements vary between countries and regions. For examples please refer to EuroPsy Regulations or Norwegian National Curriculum for Professional Education in Psychology.

  • A program designed with the best European qualification standards in mind (eg. EuroPsy). Our goal is to guarantee up-to-date European-level standards of education, training and professional development in the field of psychology.

Detailed Program Description

The first year of the program provides an intensive training in every field of psychology (developmental, emotions and motivations, social, psychopathology, cognitive, individual differences, etc.) and basics in methodology and statistics. We also focus on academic skills and cultural competencies of international students in the intercultural and multilingual world.

On the second year, the majority of modules are dedicated to 4 thematic areas: Behavioral Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Management, Mind-Communication-Technology, Cross-cultural Psychology. Students get to know how to conduct measurement, behavioral assessment and behavior change procedures. They develop communication skills, gain knowledge on interpersonal relations and conflict management: negotiations and mediations.

The third year involves a continuation of the 4 thematic areas. During years II and III students complete 5 elective modules and 4 foreign language courses as well. Students gain competencies in bilingualism and multicultural school education, the psychology of acculturation and economic migrations, use of eye-tracker and visual communication. They know what is the psychology of leadership and can apply behavioral techniques to various populations and problems.

The fourth year of the program provides an intensive theoretical education accompanied by some clinical applications in certain modules. Students are expected to acquire extensive knowledge on child and adult psychopathology and possess basic understanding and skills in psychological help, assessment, and clinical research. Students start their MA thesis in the first semester.

On the fifth year the majority of modules are dedicated to gaining knowledge on psychotherapeutic process and developing clinical practical skills. There are also two 90-hour applied modules, which include clinical training. Students finish and defend their MA thesis.

Clinical Psychology program complies with the scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing both clinical and research training. The program is thought to be theoretically integrative as we aim to expose students to a broad spectrum of theoretical and empirical approaches to clinical research and practice. As our faculty strongly adhere to evidence-based practices, the program puts more emphasis on cognitive and behavioral approaches. Program places an emphasis on competencies specified in the European qualification standard for psychologists.

What Next?

Students interested in Clinical Psychology should pursue further supervised professional training including diagnosing and treatment. During your studies you will be provided with basic applied training, but many professional authorities in the field of psychotherapy require at least a year-long supervised practice after the standard 5-year curriculum. Students interested in pursuing a career in science should consider collaborating on research projects on their last years of the Master-level program and sign up for a PhD program just after graduation. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate on research projects at SWPS.

Psychology graduates have numerous professional opportunities and they can pursue many career paths. Depending on the program selected and after they fulfill all the specific job requirements, they may find employment as: Clinical psychologist and psychotherapists; Social workers and counselors; Behavior analysts (esp. in the area of autism therapy); Neuropsychologists; Educational and academic psychologists; Cross-cultural consultants; life coaches.

Internship Opportunities

Applied modules are held outside the University in various centers where psychological services are provided. SWPS has its own Therapy Center in which, usually, one of the modules takes place. The other module might be in another placement provided by the University or it can be an individual training, even in a different country (there is a possibility of using Erasmus Placement Program for this type of training).
