Master in Political Science: Policy and Politics
The VU Master’s program Political Science: Policy and Politics offers an interdisciplinary combination of political science and public administration science, allowing you to focus on the interaction between political institutions and policy-making.
During the one-year Master's program Political Science: Policy and Politics, you receive a thorough-based training and insight in how the dynamics of politics interact with everyday governance processes. This interaction is put in light of developments at the transnational, European and global level and applied in specific policy areas like security policy.
The Master’s in Political Science gives you a thorough, broad-based training in social and political science methodology. This involves the application and practical use of a variety of political research methods within the traditions of positive theory development and critical theory.
Above all, the program aims to enable our students to critically examine political issues at a high level of conceptual abstraction and to carry out in-depth academic theoretical and empirical research on a political topic in a globalizing context. To this end, the program familiarizes you with a broad range of theories and approaches that serve both explanatory and critical objectives.
The Master’s in Political Science is a one-year full-time program, taught entirely in English. It has a workload of 60 ECTS credits and features four specialization streams.
As a graduate of the Master’s program in Political Science at Vrije Unversiteit Amsterdam, you will be capable of working effectively in a multidisciplinary environment: you will be familiar with and have a solid foundation in the approaches used in the wider world of the social sciences. Graduates are well-equipped to undertake roles in organizations where coherent policy papers are produced, based on specialist reports from various disciplinary backgrounds.
Graduates of the track Policy and Politics are qualified for a position as a senior civil servant and strategic advisor within a governmental or a non-governmental organization. Whether at the local, regional or national level, your knowledge of political and policy processes and structures will enable you to make a contribution to administration and government in various sectors. Knowledge and skills gained from the program will also be advantageous for a career in journalism. Besides that, a substantial amount of graduate students are working in a commercial environment as advisor or consultant.
The thorough application of research skills offered by the program also prepares you for successful participation in Ph.D. research in political science at our department or postgraduate institutes around the world. Occasionally, there is room within this research program for talented individuals to take up a position as a research assistant or a Ph.D. candidate.
