MA Photography

Choosing MA Photography* at NUCA will enable you to work in a creative, collaborative and professionally focused environment. NUCA has an established reputation in the specialist fields of editorial, advertising and fashion photography.

The MA in Photography emphasises the importance of professional and business skills alongside creative practice and is designed to support you in producing a highly individual body of work and an informed commercial practice. The course explores the relationship between fine art and commercial photography, encouraging an engagement with all areas of the photographic industry in order to develop students as critically-aware, aspirational practitioners.

MA Photography students work in the inspirational environment of a converted 12th century monastery fitted with contemporary studio spaces and industry-standard digital facilities.

Photography at NUCA is strongly linked to the industry and we work closely with some of the most respected photographers and professional bodies, including the Association of Photographers. Specialist guest lecturers and your tutors (as practitioners themselves) will support your business planning as a creative entrepreneur.

Workshop technicians support your studio practice and through the Media Resource Centre you will have access to specialist equipment including industry-standard cameras, portable studio flash kits, HMI and studio flash lighting.

Through self-directed research, tutorials and seminars you will deepen your understanding of contemporary photographic image-making and its contexts. Your critical and analytical skills will be strengthened and you will be able to confidently discuss the relevance and place of your work in a competitive commercial environment.

Entry Requirements

The offer of entry onto a Masters Degree (MA) is based on an expectation that you have the potential to fulfil the aims of the course of study and achieve the standard required to successfully complete the award. Entrants should normally have achieved a BA (Hons)/BSc Degree of 2:1 or above (or its equivalent), in a subject related to your proposed course of study.

Applicants who hold a Degree from another discipline may also be considered for entry, subject to the submission of a satisfactory portfolio of art, design or media-related work in support of their application.

The majority of applicants to courses at NUCA will be invited to attend an interview. This provides an invaluable chance to meet face-to-face and is the major factor in determining the success of your submission. The interview is an opportunity to assess your work and the suitability of your application and also provides you with a chance to assess NUCA's staff, campus and facilities and ask questions. The key focus of your application process is on your portfolio. Some courses may require additional entry requirements or passes in specific subjects.
