Expertise in Marine Environment

Maritime Management is a Master’s degree program for sea captains and marine engineering professionals who want to deepen their managerial expertise in safe international marine shipping. Students will be able to use the knowledge obtained for development, problem-solving and innovation within marine engineering. They will gain skills to apply holistic perspective on the development and realization of marine engineering systems both individually and as part of teams.

SAMK students will be employed

Master’s studies on Maritime Management serve to educate highly skilled, competent and innovative specialists for demanding development, management and expert positions with marine engineering companies and organizations. Both vertical and horizontal career paths are likely to take place, even before the Master’s studies have been completed.

Study Contents

The Master’s Program in Maritime Management will offer deeper insight into the management of international shipping, risk assessment, safety and security management, resilience engineering, energy and environment of shipping, and modern automation and ICT applications in marine industry. In addition, research and development methods and tools will be applied in the real life development project.


Study structure of Master’s Degree Program in Maritime Management (60 ECTS credits) consists of common advanced professional studies for both degrees (10 ECTS credits), degree-specific advanced professional studies (15 ECTS credits), elective studies (5 ECTS credits), and a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits)

Advanced professional studies
The student deepens his or her skills for applying theories into practice and analyzing problem situations in working life. He or she strengthens his or her skills for project management and for participating in research and development, as well as his or her social skills.

In his or her thesis, the student demonstrates that he or she is capable of applying scientific information, using the selected methods for analyzing and solving problems of working life and working in independent expert duties.

Maturity test
A Master's degree includes the maturity test from the field covered by the thesis (Decree 2014/1129). In the maturity test, the student demonstrates his or her familiarity with the field, as well as Finnish or Swedish language skills. The maturity test is taken for both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree (A481/2003).
Elective studies
The student has the right to include at least the minimum amount of elective studies in his or her degree, as defined in the curriculum. The elective studies can be chosen from the educational options of either Satakunta University of Applied Sciences or its partner institutions. Studies completed by using the procedure of recognizing previously acquired competencies can also be accepted as part of the elective studies.

Study Arrangements

Tuition in the Master’s Degree Program is organized so that studying can be combined with full-time work. Study courses worth 25 credits are delivered through three semesters. There will be an average two to three contact days per month. Contact sessions will be organized mainly in Helsinki in Finland. Contact sessions of elective studies can also be organized outside Finland.

Forms of Learning

Synchronous and asynchronous e-learning studies will be used at other times. Studies use blended learning methods including lectures and cooperative learning sessions, e-learning, and project-based learning. The learning process is characterized by the strong integration of real working life problems and development projects. Master’s thesis worth 30 credits is undertaken through the whole study period.
