Master in Luxury Business

Supposedly ‘timeless’ - yet today even luxury is not immune to trends.

Supposedly immaterial and service-based - instead luxury can also be conceptual and dynamic. As monopoly of big cartels, luxury is probably the only sector where it is still possible to start up new ventures, when having the right intuition. Luxury today is mainly finance-driven but cannot exist without culture. It is a precise and restricted sector however today, everything from the mass markets has been already ‘luxurified’.

There are insights in so-called mature markets, with some also in the so-called contrasting BRIC markets; every emerging market is different from one another and, following on from the crisis, some mature markets can also be considered as ‘emerging’. As business territory, luxury has been universally defined, but to answer the question: what is luxury? Everyone replies with something different and personal.

This Polimoda advanced level course is open to candidates with industry experience wishing to upgrade and enhance their knowledge and skills, as well as to those from closely related industries who are looking to enter Luxury at the highest level.

Culture, imagination, originality, and the ability to make a dream come true, a dream, commercially and financially viable, challenging competition or standing beyond competition: these are the extra features this master provides.


The philosophy of this advanced program is based on the creation of small class sizes ensuring a high level of instruction and interaction throughout. Limited numbers are also necessary due to the advanced level research and project based nature of instruction.

The program includes classes with resident teachers from the industry, international guest lectures, one-week exchange programs to London and Paris, business workshops and field trips to the most important luxury sites in Italy. Nonetheless, European luxury is mainly produced in and around Florence, and the Florentine Area is where many first class Italian company headquarters are based, proving to be the best location to be able to touch, smell and taste luxury, and live a unique experience.

This intensive program is structured around nine main concepts each following on from one another: craftsmanship, quality, price, prestige, lifestyle, design, brand, authenticity, and uniqueness. All concepts, together, in different doses, are the ingredients for every conceivable and personal definition of luxury.

As part of the final program candidates will be asked to write a start-up project to launch a new enterprise featuring a main idea, cultural research, business models and financial plan. The project will be one-to-one tutored and valid as personal portfolio that may be presented to a company or business angel.


Candidates may apply for this program if they have experience in luxury or closely related industries, and hold a valid academic degree. English is required. Attendance is mandatory.


Candidates will be selected according to their cv and motivation letter. After a first selection, the Head of Department will organize a personal interview for final enrolment admission.
