Master in International and Diplomatic Studies
International and Diplomatic Studies (IDS) is a two-year (four-semester) full-time master’s program taught in English at the University of Economics, Prague, Czech Republic (VŠE).
The program covers the fields of international politics, international economy, international law, comparative politics, diplomatic history, as well as diplomatic theory and practice. A strong emphasis is placed on issues regarding the European Union, yet the program includes a variety of optional courses on comparative politics and international relations in other parts of the world, too.
As part of the program, students in their 3rd semester are sent for a mandatory semester abroad to be hosted by a partner university (France, Germany, Mexico, Korea, Poland, Turkey, etc.). Students do not pay extra on top of their regular tuition fee for this semester. Students also receive partial financial assistance for living expenses while at a partner university.
The program provides training involving theoretical and practical knowledge in international relations with a multidisciplinary approach. This emphasis on multidisciplinarity combines historical depth with the complexity of political and economic spheres, and diplomatic practice.
Students may choose from two elective tracks:
1. General Track
Minor Field: Analysis of International Relations
Form: Semester abroad – 3rd semester at a partner university
2. Green Track
Minor Field: Environmental Policy in International Relations
Form: Specialized courses – 3rd semester at the University of Economics, Prague
Master Thesis on Environmental Issues
A large offer of optional courses and a mandatory semester abroad in the General Track (3rd semester) enable students to adopt a specific profile. During their study abroad, students have to elaborate their own project. These various specialties offer them a possibility to start their professional life right out of the master’s, with a concrete and useful professional knowledge in international relations. In addition, the university offers to students wishing to pursue a doctoral program with lectures adapted for research training in the international relations discipline.
The key advantage of this program is to immediately immerse students in the international environment through the presence of high level teachers having studied in foreign universities, and by offering the possibility to study abroad (France, Germany, Mexico, Korea, Poland, Turkey, etc.). The international environment is a tremendous asset to research internships and jobs.
The program prepares for professional and/or academic careers. The major opportunities for its graduates are:
- career diplomacy at ministries of foreign affairs, ministries of defence or other;
- high-level international expertise in government or civil service;
- high-level expertise in European or international institutions and organizations;
- work in the UN or its agencies;
- cooperation with NGOs dealing with international issues (development, environment, etc.);
- research in academic or study centres dealing with IR;
- work in international services companies (banks, consulting firms, law firms, media, etc.).
Only complete applications with the required enclosures will be considered.
The final admission results are determined by the total number of points earned on the admission exam. The final number of applicants admitted depends upon the university’s available capacity.
A Confirmation of successful completion of the admission exam will be sent to applicants by e-mail/regular post within 2 weeks following the admission exam. This confirmation can be used for the application for a long-term study visa or a temporary stay permit in the Czech Republic.
The university cannot help students with the visa procedure. Students can use services of specialized agencies of their choice. Relevant information is also available on the website of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A final Letter of Admission will follow as soon as possible after we have received:
- a legalized copy of the certificate (of recognition) of your previous higher education, and
- a payment of the tuition fee for the first semester.
