Program Description

Master in International Humanitarian Action (NOHA)

University of Deusto

Introduction

Why offer a Master’s degree in humanitarian action?

The main objective of offering a Master’s degree in humanitarian action is to address the growing need for university qualifications that have been specifically designed to tackle complex humanitarian emergencies.

Unfortunately, not only have humanitarian crises increased in number, but they have also become more complex. The number of people and areas affected by natural and man-made disasters has risen and will continue to grow in the middle and long-term due to the interrelated impact of current and emerging world tendencies such as climate change, the food crisis, the financial crisis, extreme poverty, urban development, the water shortage, energy security, migration and population growth. As a result, there is a higher demand for qualified staff who can take on the new humanitarian action challenges, demonstrating proven supervision skills and the capacity to lead. These people must be equipped to set priorities and plan operations to successfully address humanitarian crises.

What is the interest or main value added of studying a Master's degree in the International Humanitarian Action field?

The value added of holding qualifications like the Máster Universitario Erasmus Mundus en Acción Internacional Humanitarian- International Humanitarian Action (NOHA) is that it is a high-quality programme specifically designed for people who work or plan to work in the humanitarian action area in positions of responsibility in national and international organisations, both in office and field work.

Why NOHA?

The main objective of offering a Master’s degree in humanitarian action is to address the growing need for university qualifications that have been specifically designed to tackle complex humanitarian emergencies.

  • The NOHA Master’s degree in Humanitarian Action is the first of its type to address the growing need for university qualifications that have been specifically designed to prepare graduates to tackle complex humanitarian emergencies. It was created with this spirit in 1993 as a result of the actions agreed with the NOHA network (Network in Humanitarian Action / Red de Acción Humanitaria), in close collaboration with the European Commission Directorate Generals: GD for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and GD for Education and Culture. In September 2004, the European Commission chose the NOHA Master’s programme as one of the leading Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes.
  • The Master’s degree in International Humanitarian Actions ranks first in the Cooperation category of 2014/2015 Master's programmes in El Mundo.
  • The NOHA Network and the University of Deusto have signed a number of collaboration agreements with different institutions to support internships and research stays for students.

The global objective of the Master’s programme

The NOHA Master’s degree provides a high-quality academic background, targeting university graduates who work or plan to work in the humanitarian action area.

The Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree in International Humanitarian Action (NOHA) is a multidisciplinary inter-university postgraduate programme which offers an official diploma. It is taught by seven NOHA -Network On Humanitarian Assistance- member universities, the University of Deusto in Bilbao and another NOHA Network host university. Other members: Université Aix-Marseille, France; Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany; University College Dublin, Ireland; Universidad de Uppsala, Sweden, and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, the Netherlands. The programme receives collaboration and support from the European Union and NGOs, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and other humanitarian agents that the Network works closely with.

Mobility is a key element of NOHA. NOHA students are eligible for one semester mobility periods. Participants study at different universities and benefit from enriching cultural interaction and the possibility to use different languages.
