Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam benefits from its unique location in the heart of Amsterdam’s business district, where many international law firms are located. As a student of the master International Business Law (IBL), you will be able to network in a real-life business environment. Some courses are taught by legal practitioners, who can give you a genuine understanding of how law works in practice. Classes are small, international and interactive. The mix of nationalities within the group gives the IBL programme an extra dimension.
STRUCTURE OF THE IBL PROGRAMME
The Master’s programme in International Business Law consists of mandatory courses, electives courses, a research seminar and a Master thesis. Students must opt for a specialization (‘Profile Transactions’ or ‘Profile Regulatory’). The mandatory courses provide you with a general legal foundation, while later elective courses focus on more specific areas of international business law. In the final stage, you will write your Master thesis. The IBL programme focuses on rules and practices for promoting international commercial transactions. It aims at developing an understanding of the world’s trading system and rules for international investments, and it examines the legal aspects of business practices. You will study the main legal areas and the interaction between the actors involved in transactions. In addition, you will develop skills to anticipate, analyse and address problems that may arise in your future career: the legal practice of international business.
YOUR FUTURE CAREER
After finishing this Master’s programme, you will be well equipped for your further professional training. You can start a career as a professional business lawyer, an in-house counsel for a company, a government official, or a legal professional for an international organization. Pursuing a PhD is also an option. Alumni have found jobs at international law firms, accounting companies, banks and government agencies.
SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Ideally, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Law, but students with a sound academic background and proven experience in the field of law may also apply. IBL is a selective Master programme and open to a limited number of students only.
