M.A. program Intercultural Theology offers a unique combination of theory and practical experiences. Teaching language is English. The study course lasts for four terms and is offered by Göttingen University in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences for Intercultural Theology Hermannsburg (Fachhochschule). It imparts basic knowledge about intercultural theology, which is to be applied in a project abroad or in Germany. The Master degree qualifies for various jobs in the churches, in Non-Governmental-Organizations, media, institutions of adult education or scientific institutes.

The M.A.program Intercultural Theology aims at equipping graduates to foster intercultural, interreligious and interdenominational communication and cooperation. The program enables students to conduct in-depth scientific work in regards to theologically responsible practice within intercultural and interreligious communication and education processes. The program, therefore, conveys knowledge on structural elements, forms and transformation processes of the Christian message in different cultural contexts. It enables students to analyze and understands the trans- and intercultural characters and diversity of the cultural form of Christianity. Students will learn to responsibly contextually communicate the Gospel and to reflect the interaction of Christians with people of other religions, as well as analyze the theological, social, political and economical conditions of (inter)cultural transformation processes.
The international mixture of students, as well as a mandatory stay abroad at a partner university, emphasize the intercultural educational process, promoting communication and cognitive abilities within the context. Students will work on a concrete project during their stay abroad in which will emphasize the application of scientific findings.
In addition to intercultural and contextual theology and project work, students obtain fundamental skills in intercultural communication and are supposed to learn basic German and get the opportunity to learn relevant languages of the Christian tradition (e.g. Hebrew, Greek).
The program is offered in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences for Intercultural Theology Hermannsburg (Fachhochschule) and with partner universities in India, Ethiopia, Korea, Japan, Ghana, Lebanon, Armenia, Estonia, Indonesia, Tanzania, China, and Belarus.
The degree qualifies graduates for fields of occupations in works and institutions of missions and ecumenism, of churches in Germany and abroad, church communions (World Council of Churches, Luther World Federation) as well as for work in non-governmental organizations, media, institutions of adult education or scientific institutions.
Completed course of study in Theology (Bachelor, church examination, exam, “Diplom”, 1st state examination/M.Ed. or equivalent) in Germany or abroad, or Completed course of study of a relevant subject (e.g. Cultural Anthropology, Religious Science, Indology, African Studies, Development Studies, Sociology, Political Science etc). Students must go through the selection procedure of the Faculty. Number of study places available: 20 per semester.
All course are taught in English. Applicants whose native language is not English must verify their knowledge of English: We accept TOEFL and IELTS (Academic). Applicants have to meet the minimum score of 80 TOEFL ißT, resp. 6.0 IELTS; Cambridge Cert at least a „C“ (pass.); UNIcert at least level 3.
