The master’s programme in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology aims to provide a deep understanding of how to design and operate state-of-the-art life science-based processes, with respect to product quality, sustainability and finance. The goal is to use cells and cell components such as enzymes in order to produce commodities including fine and bulk chemicals, pharmaceuticals or their building blocks, food, paper and pulp, energy, polymeric materials and clean water. The programme offers a comprehensive education in this vital and varied field, enabling students to prepare for careers in Sweden or internationally.

Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology at KTH

The two-year programme comprises advanced courses regarding biotechnological tools used for the development of industrial processes, sustainable production of commodities and the impact of such processes on the environment and the society. The courses focus on five subject areas: cell-based process biotechnology, enzyme biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, medical applications of biotechnology and omics are programme offers. The student is able to tailor their education to create a unique profile and expertise. The courses are tailored to provide a holistic perspective and comprise both theoretical knowledge and practical application of theory. Skills such as problem-solving and project management as well as professional communication are emphasised on several courses. The programme curriculum is closely linked to the research undertaken at the School of Biotechnology and to the Bio/Pharmaceutical/Chemical industry.

Degree project

A master's degree project is carried out during the last term of the programme where the student work on a research topic related to the theoretical courses in the curriculum. The project may be carried out either in a research setting at KTH, in industry or in another university or research institute anywhere in the world.

Graduates of the programme will acquire the skills necessary for a professional career in the biotechnology industry, as well as those for further academic studies. These areas are expanding worldwide, offering anyone with a master’s degree in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology vast career opportunities, including those found in patent and consultant agencies and finance.
