Master in History of Society with a specialisation in Global History and International Relations

Why choose History of Society in Rotterdam?

The Master History of Society is an interdisciplinary programme: we combine knowledge and theories from both the humanities and the social sciences to analyse complex historical issues. An international and comparative approach teaches us to identify similarities and differences in historical case studies.

The international track of the Master History of Society is titled ‘Global History and International Relations’. In this programme, two otherwise independent fields of study are combined to analyse international relations from a historical and global perspective. We focus for example on the rise and fall of great powers such as the British Empire and the United States. We discuss the historical backgrounds of contemporary geopolitical issues and show how the past itself is mobilized by groups and individuals to legitimize policies and to construct identities.

In Rotterdam you learn to describe both the broad outlines and the unique and specific aspects of historical events. Our programme is characterised by small-scale seminars, personal supervision, and intensive contacts with faculty and fellow students. We maintain excellent contacts with archives, museums, and research institutes that offer valuable research internships to our students. For several years in a row the Master History of Society has been named the best history Master in the Netherlands by both the journal Elsevier and Keuzegids Masters.

One of the courses: Mapping Global Order
This course combines two specialisations: International Relations Theory and World History (or Global History). The perspective of the course is the highest possible level of international relations and global interactions, including empires, regions or continents. We will take a historical perspective on the rise and decline of empires and regions since about 1600 until present, covering the western world and beyond. We will ask ourselves what the constitutive factors are of global historical developments. We will study the rise and fall of empires, but we will also question the influence of non-state actors such as NGO’s and multinational corporations on international relations. We will study the historical roots of contemporary attempts of empire building, and by doing so we highlight the dynamics between the global (or macro level) and the local (or micro level).

Student testimonial

Erasmys School student

“What makes this Master’s programme unique, is the interdisciplinary approach which is used to understand the past as well as the present. Amongst other things you learn to develop an informed perspective on the historical background of any society. As a graduate of this programme you can take up many different positions. For now, I am mainly interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or a policy officer at an international organisation.” Ricardo Klepke
