History, as a discipline, has undergone many changes over the past decades in terms of its approaches, methodology and sources. With this awareness, the Graduate Program in History at İstanbul Şehir University offers a curriculum that adopts an interdisciplinary and comparative approach. The goals of the program are as follows:

  • To develop new methods in the understanding and interpretation of historical sources,
  • To establish new themes and agendas in historiography in keeping with local needs,
  • To contribute to world history with local perspectives.

The Graduate Program in History, with faculty members who have publishing and teaching experience on both national and international levels, sets out to contribute to the discipline of history in Turkey, offering research projects and a dynamic curriculum that is kept up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.

The Graduate Program is designed to be a process that leads the student into an area of specialization. A graduate with a Masters Degree is expected to have mastered historiography and have a good knowledge of general history, as well as to have acquired the reading skills in at least one modern language (other than English) and another research language and to be able to write a competent thesis.

The primary language of instruction is English. Students who do not have the requisite level of English are expected to attend a year-long English preparatory course.

MA PROGRAM

At our University, Master’s programs are offered in Cultural Studies and Modern Turkish Studies under the Graduate School of Social Sciences (in addition to the programs in Management and Industrial and Systems Engineering). The Master’s Program in History runs in cooperation with the programs under the Graduate School of Social Sciences.

The current areas of concentration for the History Master’s Program are as follows:

Ottoman History (Urban History, Economic History, Intelectual History, Late Period Political and Administrative History), History of Islam (Political History, Economic History) and Comparative Studies.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master’s program is done according to the ranking of the applicants upon evaluation of their undergraduate GPAs, English Proficiency exam results, ALES, GRE or GMAT scores, cover letters, interviews and recommendation letters.

The primary language of instruction is English. Students who do not have the requisite level of English are expected to attend a year-long English preparatory course.

Applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 (out of 4.0) and a minimum TOEFL score of 210/80/550. Equivalent IELTS, KPDS or ÜDS results are also accepted. Students whose scientific knowledge is deemed adequate but who lack the required level of English may be admitted, on the condition that they acquire English Proficiency within one year.

Applicants are given scientific examinations and interviews by the department.
